CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 598 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,200, 34.3% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
50.3% of 2017 Civic Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is more of a good thing, and its appeal starts with the fact that it brought the Civic hatchback body style back to the U.S. for the first time since 2005. Honda had already redesigned the Civic for 2016 with a new look, new technology, and a new turbocharged engine option, and the hatchback joined that formula with extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks. That combination makes it especially attractive to buyers who want a compact car that is practical without giving up a fun-to-drive character.
In testing, the Civic Hatchback came across as an easy car to enjoy in everyday use, handling stop-and-go commuting and a highway drive with a full hatch of cargo without losing its appeal. It is still a Civic, so it remains a safe bet, but the hatchback body gives it a little more versatility and a little more personality. Owners also tend to praise its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design. Some drawbacks have been noted as well, including concerns about the air conditioning system, paint quality, and the lack of certain features like GPS.

I love the features in the car. It's exactly what my daughter wanted. It's a little too low to the ground.

I am obsessed with this car. Best car I have ever had. I previously had the LX, but it got totalled, and I bought the same exact car but it is the EX. Heated seats, sunroof, push start. I really, really love it.

The features on this car is something else. The car has a blind spot camera on the right mirror. Hondas are a really reliable car. We’ve had a Honda until it had 300k+ miles on it and had no problems. Only thing I wish it had was a GPS but it’s not a huge negative. I was looking at either the Mazda3 hatchback or the civic hatchback and ultimately went with the civic just with the sleek design of the vehicle. Super smooth in its driving and would definitely recommend going Honda!

Owners consistently praise its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design. That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a compact car that adds hatchback practicality and extra cargo space without giving up the Civic’s fun-to-drive character.
The market also looks supportive, with 34.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels reliable and dependable, with praise for its long-term appeal and everyday usability. The expert review also emphasizes the Civic’s long history of reliability and describes the CVT as unobtrusive, which supports the idea that it should be easy to live with over time.
Honda also notes that the Honda Sensing package is worth considering if you do a lot of stop-and-go driving, since it adds useful driver-assistance features. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been cared for well, especially given the owner-reported concerns about air conditioning and paint quality.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 49.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, paint condition, and any signs of prior repair. It’s also smart to confirm that the car’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering, since some desirable features are tied to higher trims or packages. If you’re shopping a used example, focus on condition first and features second.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The hatchback’s design adds 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and the interior is described as smartly laid out with quality materials and effective soundproofing. The base setup is more stripped back when it comes to tech and convenience, while higher trims add more equipment and a more complete ownership experience.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It makes 174 hp in LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims, while Sport and Sport Touring trims get 180 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, and the CVT is optional on LX and Sport but required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
- Safety package: The Honda Sensing package adds collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic. It is standard on Sport Touring and costs an additional $1,000 on EX-L Navi. LaneWatch is another available option that shows blind-spot views on the touchscreen.
- Infotainment: You can get a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EX-L Navi and Sport Touring trims add navigation. If you choose a stick shift, you give up the better tech setup and get a simpler audio system instead.
- Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the hatchback body, the turbocharged engine, and the standard manual transmission. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and are comfortable with a simpler equipment list.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more powerful 180 hp tune and keeps the manual transmission standard. If you want the most engaging version without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the one to focus on.
- EX: This trim shifts you toward convenience, since the CVT is required and the car gets the more complete tech setup. It suits you if you want an easier daily driver and don’t need a manual.
- EX-L Navi: This is the trim to consider if you want navigation and are willing to pay for more equipment. It also becomes a stronger safety pick if you add Honda Sensing.
- Sport Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, and Honda Sensing is standard here. It’s the right choice if you want the most complete package and don’t mind paying for it.
Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an additional $1,000.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 609 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.21% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 49.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,673, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $16,180 sits slightly below last year's $16,716.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than assuming the market will lift the car’s value on its own.
The Civic Hatchback still benefits from strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal, which helps support demand when it’s time to sell. Well-kept examples with desirable features should remain easier to move than rougher or less-equipped ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in crash tests, and the Civic sedan is rated a Top Safety Pick by IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the key driver-assistance suite here, and it adds collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that can follow traffic at low speeds. LaneWatch is another useful available feature, especially if you drive in the city and want extra help checking your blind spot.
One important caveat is that Honda Sensing is not standard on every trim. If safety tech matters to you, you’ll want to pay close attention to trim level and package content when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The first U.S. Civic Hatchback in years adds extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks, making it especially appealing if you want practicality with a fun-to-drive feel.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a smart pick if you want the hatchback body style, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that has softened enough to create some negotiating room. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping for the cleanest, best-equipped example you can find rather than chasing the absolute cheapest listing.
