CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 586 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,360, 32.6% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
53.2% of 2017 Civic Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is more of a good thing, and its appeal starts with the fact that it brought the Civic hatchback body style back to the U.S. for the first time since 2005. Honda had already redesigned the Civic for 2016 with a new look, new technology, and a new turbocharged engine option, and the hatchback joined that formula with extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks. That combination makes it especially attractive to buyers who want a compact car that is practical without giving up a fun-to-drive character.
In testing, the Civic Hatchback came across as an easy car to enjoy in everyday use, handling stop-and-go commuting and a highway drive with a full hatch of cargo without losing its appeal. It is still a Civic, so it remains a safe bet, but the hatchback body gives it a little more versatility and a little more personality. Owners also tend to praise its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design. Some drawbacks have been noted as well, including concerns about the air conditioning system, paint quality, and the lack of certain features like GPS.

I am obsessed with this car. Best car I have ever had. I previously had the LX, but it got totalled, and I bought the same exact car but it is the EX. Heated seats, sunroof, push start. I really, really love it.

The features on this car is something else. The car has a blind spot camera on the right mirror. Hondas are a really reliable car. We’ve had a Honda until it had 300k+ miles on it and had no problems. Only thing I wish it had was a GPS but it’s not a huge negative. I was looking at either the Mazda3 hatchback or the civic hatchback and ultimately went with the civic just with the sleek design of the vehicle. Super smooth in its driving and would definitely recommend going Honda!

Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to reliability and a long history of reliability, which is exactly the kind of language you want to see when you’re shopping used. The expert evaluation reinforces that the Civic name has a reputation as a safe bet, and the hatchback’s practical packaging adds to its appeal for daily use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core platform and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been affected by the concerns owners mention, especially around air conditioning and paint quality.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows signs of uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or wear that doesn’t match the mileage. Because owner feedback mentions air conditioning concerns and paint quality issues, those are smart areas to focus on during your walkaround and test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The hatchback’s styling differs from the sedan, with blacked-out wheels and honeycomb trim unique to the hatch. The interior is smartly laid out, uses quality materials, and offers strong cargo utility, but the hatchback’s proportions are less sleek than the sedan’s.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a single 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims make 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims increase output to 180 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, while the CVT is optional on those trims and required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an additional $1,000. It includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic. LaneWatch is another available option that shows blind-spot views on the dashboard touchscreen.
- Infotainment: You can get a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. Manual-transmission models do not get the full tech setup and instead come with a simpler audio system, a single USB connection, and no active safety features.
- Fuel efficiency: The available content does not provide MPG or MPGe figures.
Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Sport, Sport Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the hatchback body, the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and a 6-speed manual as standard. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the hatchback and are comfortable with a simpler equipment set.
- EX: This trim adds more convenience and tech, and it’s the better everyday pick if you want the Civic Hatchback’s core strengths without staying at the bare minimum. It’s a strong value choice for shoppers who want a more complete package.
- EX-L Navi: This is the trim to consider if you want navigation and the available Honda Sensing package. It’s the best fit if you want a more upscale, better-equipped hatchback for commuting and longer drives.
- Sport: This trim brings the more powerful 180-hp tune and keeps the manual transmission standard, which makes it the most appealing choice if you care about the hatchback’s fun-to-drive character. It’s the enthusiast-friendly value pick.
- Sport Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, and it’s the one to buy if you want the most features along with Honda Sensing standard. It suits you best if you want the top trim and don’t mind paying for it.
Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an additional $1,000.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing into the first listing you see.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 616 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.93% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,673, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $16,292 sits slightly below last year's $16,784.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may also mean a seller needs to price competitively to move the car. The year-over-year decline is modest rather than dramatic, so this model still appears to hold value reasonably well.
If you’re planning to resell later, the hatchback’s practicality, strong owner satisfaction, and broad appeal should help support demand. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment should be easier to move than cars with visible wear or accident records.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in crash tests, and the Civic sedan is rated a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance package, and it includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that can follow traffic even at low speeds. LaneWatch is another useful available feature, especially if you drive in the city and want extra help with blind spots.
One important caveat is that the IIHS did not rate the Civic Hatchback specifically, so the hatchback’s safety picture leans on the broader Civic family’s results rather than a hatchback-specific award.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights the hatchback’s extra cargo space, sport-oriented tweaks, and everyday usability as a practical, fun-to-drive compact car.
The bottom line: If you want the hatchback body style, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that has softened a bit, the 2017 is a sensible buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully for a clean, well-priced example; if you want the most confidence, prioritize a car with a clean history and the equipment you actually plan to use.
