Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?

The owner summary points to reliability, and it also describes the car as a model people can count on for a smooth, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing Honda’s long history of reliability and the Civic Hatchback’s practical, everyday usability.

The ownership risk for used buyers is less about the core reputation and more about finding a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history will matter more than the badge alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?

At 49.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has visible cosmetic wear or signs of inconsistent maintenance. Given the owner feedback, it’s smart to focus on the air conditioning system, paint condition, and any missing features that matter to you.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The hatchback’s styling is shared across the lineup, but the hatch-specific blacked-out wheels and honeycomb trim help distinguish it from the sedan. The cabin is smartly laid out and uses quality materials, while the hatchback body adds 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
• Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims make 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims increase output to 180 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, while the CVT is optional on those trims and required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and costs an additional $1,000 on EX-L Navi. It includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic. LaneWatch is another useful option for blind-spot visibility.
• Infotainment: Higher trims can be equipped with a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. Manual-transmission models miss out on the better tech package and instead get a simpler audio setup.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the provided data.

Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the hatchback body, the turbocharged engine, and the standard manual transmission. It’s the simplest way to get into the model, but you give up the richer tech and safety content found higher up the range.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more powerful 180 hp tune and keeps the manual transmission standard. If you want the hatchback’s sporty character without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• EX: This trim shifts you toward convenience, with the CVT required and the more mainstream 174 hp tune. It suits you if you care more about easy daily driving and less about the manual-transmission experience.
• EX-L Navi: This is the trim to consider if you want the better tech and navigation, and it’s also the one where Honda Sensing becomes available for an extra $1,000. It’s a strong pick if you want a more complete feature set.
• Sport Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, and Honda Sensing is standard here. It’s the right choice if you want the most safety and convenience content in one package.

If safety features matter to you, the Honda Sensing package is the key trim-level upgrade to watch for.

What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?

The current average of $16,193 sits slightly below last year's $16,735.

That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A softer current average usually means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if similar cars are still plentiful.

Even so, the Civic Hatchback’s practical body style and strong reputation help support demand. If you keep the car in good condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that can follow traffic at low speeds. It is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an additional $1,000.

LaneWatch is another helpful safety feature, especially if you drive in the city and want extra visibility when changing lanes.

Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
