What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing or hauling use in its past. Pay close attention to body condition, brake feel, cabin wear, and any signs that the truck has been used harder than average. Because this model can be configured for serious work, the way a specific truck was maintained matters as much as the trim name on the tailgate.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Denali adds a more upscale look with chrome exterior details, 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, a Bose premium sound system, and navigation, while the standard truck is more basic and misses those luxury touches.
• Powertrain: You can get a gasoline V6 or a turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder; the V6 is described as robust and satisfying, while the diesel adds torque and improves fuel economy.
• Safety package: Denali models include forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, while the truck also includes a reversing camera, Teen Driver technology, Rear Seat Reminder, and OnStar automatic collision notification. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking are not offered.
• Infotainment: IntelliLink uses an 8-inch screen on Denali, with a responsive touchscreen, logical menus, and smartphone projection capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is described as returning 19 mpg in combined driving, and the diesel improves combined fuel economy by 4 mpg.

If you want the best-value path in this lineup, Denali is also the only trim explicitly described here, so it is the clear choice for shoppers who want the most feature-rich version. That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. Should I buy a 2017 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.34% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its strong towing and hauling capability in a compact midsize package.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,298, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $19,971 average.
• It was a refreshed midsize truck in a revived segment, giving buyers a notable domestic alternative.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall package, the 2017 is the better target because it combines solid owner satisfaction, a favorable price trend, and standout capability.
