CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 241 currently listed for sale near Philadelphia, PA and an average price of $20,740, 14.9% of 2017 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Mustang 4.42 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running performance heritage with a broad range of body styles and engines. It is part of the sixth generation, which was revealed in late 2013 and began production in the summer of 2014 for the 2015 model year. That redesign brought a sleeker, smoother look, kept the coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and added a new electric system for opening and closing the convertible top. It also marked the first time Ford produced and marketed the Mustang for a global audience, and it was the first Mustang to feature Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup.
For 2017, the Mustang’s appeal comes from its rear-wheel-drive layout and wide engine spread. Base cars use Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines include a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Transmission choices include two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety helps explain why the Mustang remains attractive to buyers who want a car that can be tailored toward everyday use or more serious performance.
There are also some drawbacks to keep in mind. Models with the EcoBoost engine are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. The Mustang also has a small rear seat, which limits practicality. Even so, the 2017 Ford Mustang remains distinctive for offering iconic styling, strong performance potential, and a wide range of configurations in a single, recognizable package.

Car had nice features and low mileage. The color and wheels weren't my favorite, but that's a personal preference. The price seemed a bit high (I see now they just increased it!), but a nice car overall.

The blower motor needs replacing. The check engine light was on. Felt like it was misfiring when you punch it. Last oil change sticker read last year. Afraid of deeper engine issues.

| Year-Round High | $22,438.26 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,253 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.28% |

There are 1,779 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $20,062.78, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Ford Mustang earns a 4.42/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and stylish design, and many also like the range of engine choices. That mix fits you well if you want a classic pony-car formula with coupe and convertible body styles and a more modern chassis than earlier Mustangs. With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a car people tend to count on for enjoyable daily use, with praise centered on performance and driving fun. The same reviews suggest the Mustang can feel dependable in the ways that matter most to enthusiasts, especially when you choose the right engine and condition. For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is more about finding a well-kept example than assuming every car will age the same way.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on overall condition, since the market includes both clean examples and cars with incident history. Pay close attention to how the car drives and whether the listing details match the vehicle’s actual equipment and condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Mustang?

- Inventory: There are 1,779 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.1% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2017 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $21,745 sits slightly below last year's $22,253.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and trim choice will matter a lot, especially because buyers tend to respond well to desirable performance versions. A clean history and strong presentation should help you protect value better than a rougher example.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

- At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $19,603, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,745 average.
- It blends heritage touches with fresh packaging updates.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $22,633, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $21,745 average.
- It feels more polished and capable with broader appeal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the right primary choice if you want a well-liked Mustang with a softer price than the next year and enough inventory to shop carefully. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better secondary path; if you want a more refined feel and can spend more, the 2018 is worth the stretch.
