Is the 2017 Ford F-150 a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Ford F-150 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its power, safety features, and spacious interior, and many also like the range of options and upscale amenities in higher trims. That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a truck aimed at buyers who want serious off-road capability and a more modern, specialized take on the full-size pickup. Good and great deals account for 32.0% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Ford F-150 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a truck that feels dependable and capable over time, with many owners highlighting its power and practical everyday usability. The expert drive notes reinforce that it’s built to handle demanding use while still working as a daily driver, which supports the case for durability. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying too much for a higher-mileage truck that has been used hard off-road or loaded with expensive options.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-150?

At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been modified or used off-road. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, tire condition, and signs of hard use, since this model year’s appeal is tied closely to specialized capability. If you’re shopping a higher-trim example, make sure the equipment still works as intended and that the truck’s condition matches its asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Raptor leans toward function over form, with custom-designed 35-inch tires, a beefed-up Fox Racing suspension, and a torque-on-demand transfer case. It also adds a more reinforced frame, revised approach, breakover, and departure angles, and a cabin that can be loaded with luxury features in higher equipment groups.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 makes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, and the 10-speed transmission helps keep highway revs low. The setup is tuned for off-road speed and everyday drivability, though the transmission can feel confused when wheelspin gets aggressive.
• Safety package: Standard blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage is part of the truck’s tech story, and the available Technology package adds lane-keep with warning and intervention, adaptive cruise with collision mitigation, auto high-beams, and auto wipers. The 360-degree camera with split view is also a useful add-on for parking and trail use.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3 and Sync Connect, plus standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is a major improvement over the older interface and is paired with useful camera and connectivity features.
• Fuel efficiency: The Raptor is rated at 15 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware and a new platform.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,635, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,106 average.
• It leans into luxury with a more upscale, premium-focused personality.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $23,562, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $21,106 average.
• It’s a more well-rounded truck with broader everyday capability.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive and performance-focused version of this truck, the 2017 is the right pick. If price matters more than specialization, the 2016 is the cheaper route, while the 2018 makes sense if you want a broader all-around pickup and can spend more.
