CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Expedition

Summary
With 1,343 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,372.00, 31.8% of 2017 Ford Expeditions for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Expedition 4.29 / 5 stars.
68.1% of 2017 Expedition models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Expedition stands out as a full-size SUV that leans hard into family-hauling practicality. It offers a third row of seats, plenty of passenger space, and a smooth ride, helped by its independent rear suspension. It also includes adjustable pedals, a feature the source highlights as something you can get on the modern Expedition but not on the GM full-size SUV twins.
It shares its basic truck connection with the Ford F-150, and that relationship helps explain its rugged underpinnings and familiar styling cues. The Expedition’s base drivetrain is rear-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available, and the extended-wheelbase version frees up more passenger and cargo space. The model also keeps pace with modern tech, with available satellite radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 360-degree cameras, and hands-free driving capabilities. For buyers who want a more upscale feel, top-trimmed models can bring luxury touches such as a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a 15.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, massaging seats, and special leather seating surfaces.
As a used SUV, the 2017 Expedition’s appeal is its mix of space, comfort, and capability. The source describes it as having lots of interior space, a strong powertrain, and comfortable seats, while owner feedback echoes the roomy cabin, smooth ride, and good value for money. The tradeoffs are also clear: it can be loud on the highway, tough to drive in tight spaces, and its max horsepower depends on premium fuel.

Fantastic deal and love the Expeditions. It is the base model but being the EL makes up for it. Plenty of space so traveling will give plenty of elbow room.

I LOVE my car!! It rides so smooth, there are a ton of bells and whistles for the price that I paid for it, and the third row is so large that myself and my SIL climbed in the back and sat comfortably. I know I got a great deal!!

Is the 2017 Ford Expedition a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Ford Expedition earns a 4.29/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, comfort, and value for money, and they also call out the smooth ride and broad feature availability. That lines up well if you want a full-size SUV built around family hauling, passenger room, and everyday comfort. With 28.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Expedition reliable?
Owners rate it 4.29/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also leans toward dependable day-to-day use, with repeated praise for comfort, value, and a smooth ride that suggests many buyers feel confident living with it over time. Mentions of minor defects and interior-material concerns are worth noting, but they do not dominate the overall response. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure a specific example has been maintained well and has not accumulated hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Expedition?
At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of body repair, uneven wear, or interior condition issues. Because this SUV is valued for space and comfort, focus on how well the cabin, seats, and major features have held up in real use.

What is the 2017 Ford Expedition's resale value?
The current average of $14,410 sits slightly below last year's $15,218.
That price movement suggests the model has softened, which can make resale a little more competitive for future sellers. If you buy now, you may be entering at a more favorable point than owners who bought a year ago. For a seller, that means condition, mileage, and history will matter even more when it comes time to list.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.29/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.29/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $20,178, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,410 average.
- It brings a full redesign with more room, more comfort, and greater towing capability.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2017 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and meaningful deal availability. If you’re willing to spend more for the redesign and its added space and capability, the 2018 is the stronger upgrade path for buyers who prioritize maximum utility.
