I bought a 2017 Escape in 2019 with 30,000 miles on it from a lease. I’ve never been a ford fan or even owned one, but I stepped out on a limb and this became the best car I’ve ever owned! Minimal maintenance and repairs and just a great car!! I put 160,000 miles on this car with zero issues. I would definitely buy it again.

Reviewed a 2017 Ford Escape on Jul 13, 2021
I had a 2017 Ford Escape SE with the Sport Appearance package. I loved it so much, Im looking for one just like it. Most impressive was its handling in an accident. Mine was unfortunately totaled, but it did great, deploying the proper air bags, automatically shutting the engine down and putting itself in crash mode, automatically turning the flashers on, and immediately dialing 911 FOR me. I was spun into a ditch and the car stayed upright. Its well balanced and handles well, and the tech features you can get on it are pretty top notch. With the Ford Pass app, you can start your vehicle remotely, lock your doors a mile a way if you need to. I love it. The only short side for me had to deal with the tires on the Sport Appearance package. I felt like they didnt handle wet roads as well as I would have liked, and the thinner tires provided a slightly less smooth ride. I could feel the road a little more with them, but I loved the look of them and it was worth the sacrifice for me.

How much does the 2017 Ford Escape cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,228 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,228 |
| Year-Round High | $10,930 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,930 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.43% |
Prices have softened 6.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,217 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Ford Escape a good car?
Yes — your 4.7/5 user rating and the expert score of 7.7/10 both point to a well-liked used crossover. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, handling, and cargo space, and they also like the available features and strong performance. For you, that makes the Escape especially appealing if you want an everyday crossover that balances practicality with a more engaging drive. The market also shows 32.0% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a vehicle that many drivers feel good about living with over time, with comfort and everyday usability coming up repeatedly alongside the praise for performance.
The Escape’s performance notes emphasize a smooth-shifting transmission, solid braking, and a quiet cabin, all of which support a dependable-feeling ownership experience. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention Ford’s 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and roadside assistance coverage, which add some reassurance for used buyers.
For you, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that avoids the quality complaints some owners raised.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Escape?
At 67.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body alignment, signs of prior repair, and how well the interior and liftgate fit and function. Because some owners mention interior smell and hatch door alignment, those are worth checking closely on any candidate you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S is the most stripped-down version, with cloth seats, a manually adjustable driver’s seat, and the simpler Sync system. The SE adds more convenience and comfort equipment, while the Titanium brings the most upscale features, including leather-trimmed seats, ambient lighting, and standard Sync 3.
- Powertrain: The Escape offers a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder, plus turbocharged EcoBoost options that add more power and better performance. The stronger turbo setup is the one to look for if you want the most responsive driving experience.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, traction control, brake assist, 4-wheel antilock brakes, and blind-spot-integrated mirrors. Higher trims and options add features such as lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping aid, driver alert aid, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning with brake support.
- Infotainment: The base system is the simpler Sync setup with a 6-speaker audio system. Sync 3 adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Sync Connect brings remote access features through FordPass.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter EcoBoost is rated at 20 mpg city/27 highway/23 combined in 4-wheel-drive form, and testing returned 24.5 mpg.
Which 2017 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2017 Ford Escape is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Escape, but it also feels the most basic. You get the standard engine, cloth seating, and the simpler infotainment setup, so it makes sense mainly if price is your top priority.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a much broader mix of comfort and convenience features, plus access to more options. If you want a balanced used Escape without stretching to the top trim, this is the one to target.
- Titanium: This is the most feature-rich version, with standard Sync 3, Sync Connect, a premium audio system, leather-trimmed seats, and more upscale lighting and liftgate equipment. Choose it if you want the most polished Escape experience.
Safety equipment is strongest on higher trims, where more advanced driver-assistance features become available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Escape?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop but still need to move quickly on the best listings.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,217 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,228, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $10,228 sits slightly below last year's $10,930.
That decline suggests the Escape has softened in the used market, which can be a concern if you’re thinking about future trade-in value. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower price point than a year ago, but you should still expect resale to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Ford Escape safe?
The 2017 Ford Escape earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in all but the rollover test, where it earns a four-star rating. It also receives top scores from the IIHS, including Good ratings in all crash-test categories except small overlap front, which is rated Acceptable.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, multiple airbags, brake assist, traction control, 4-wheel antilock brakes, and blind-spot-integrated mirrors. Available upgrades include bi-xenon HID headlights, lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping aid, driver alert aid, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning with brake support.
One caveat to keep in mind is the IIHS Marginal LATCH rating, which points to some difficulty securing child seats.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 brings a meaningful mid-cycle refresh with stronger technology and safety equipment.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,815, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,228 average.
- It’s a well-rounded compact crossover with agile handling and comfortable seating.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped Escape with stronger tech and safety updates, the 2017 is the smarter target. If your budget is tighter and you mainly want the Escape’s core driving feel and comfort, the 2016 can still make sense.
