CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Durango
overall

Summary
With 1,293 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,846, 30.6% of 2017 Dodge Durangos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Durango 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
62.7% of 2017 Durango models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Durango stands out as a full-size SUV that blends family-friendly space with real utility. It has room for up to 7 passengers and can tow up to 7,400 pounds, while still offering a crossover-like ride and the amenities a busy family needs to get through the day. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something that can handle daily errands, road trips, and heavier-duty tasks without giving up comfort.
Inside, the 2017 Durango can range from basic to beautiful depending on trim, but even the highest versions do not aim for a refined luxury feel. Instead, the cabin keeps a rugged character that matches the Dodge brand, and the focus stays on function rather than appearance. At the same time, it can be very well equipped, with features to keep kids entertained and adults comfortable. Owners also praise its powerful V8 engine, stylish design, spacious interior, and smooth ride, though some have concerns about safety ratings, particularly crash tests.

It’s a great vehicle. I love the looks. I love the tow capacity: I love the features and room. The 3.6/8 speed is a great combo. But… the small offset crash rating is a disaster. And as a dad of teens it made me cross it off my list. Why hasn’t dodge addresses this? Even mitigated it?

On the ownership side, the included powertrain warranty and roadside assistance help reduce some long-term risk, though you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition on used examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the trim you’re looking at. Because the Durango can vary a lot from basic to well equipped, it’s worth checking that the features match the listing and that the vehicle has been maintained consistently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Durango offers four trim levels—SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T—each with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The base SXT is the most stripped-down version, with seating for five and a 5.0-inch screen, while the GT adds more convenience and a larger 8.4-inch screen. The Citadel brings a more upscale equipment set, and the R/T is the performance-oriented choice.
- Powertrain: You can choose between a 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The V6 is the efficiency-minded option, while the V8 adds stronger towing and more effortless acceleration.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning. Some of these features are optional rather than standard, so verify equipment carefully.
- Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, and available features include SiriusXM Radio, Traffic, and Travel Link, plus premium audio upgrades. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated 18/25 mpg, and the Hemi V8 is rated 14/22 mpg. The V8’s stronger performance comes with a noticeable fuel-economy penalty.
Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Durango’s space and towing ability without paying for extras. It comes with the V6, five-passenger seating, and the basic Uconnect setup, so it’s the value play if you’re focused on utility first.
- GT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and convenience upgrades, including power front seats and the larger 8.4-inch screen. It also opens the door to optional third-row seating for up to 7 passengers.
- Citadel: This is the trim to consider if you want the most upscale Durango experience short of the performance model. It adds the V8 option, ventilated Nappa leather, navigation, and a premium Alpine audio system.
- R/T: This is the choice if you want the Durango’s performance character front and center. It comes only with the Hemi V8 and adds sport suspension, performance steering, and unique interior touches.
The safety package is feature-rich, but several driver-assistance items remain optional rather than standard, so check each listing closely.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,288 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,746, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $14,845 sits slightly below last year's $16,030.
That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the Durango easier to purchase now but may also temper near-term resale upside. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can help protect your future value. Higher-demand trims and well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially when the vehicle history is clean.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2017 Dodge Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Durango includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available safety tech includes adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning. Some of these features are optional, so you should confirm exactly what a used example has before you buy.
The crash-test results are the main caution point here, especially if safety is a top priority for your family.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 model balances family space, towing strength, and a rugged, well-equipped cabin.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,653, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,845 average.
- It emphasizes rear-wheel-drive character and added sport-oriented updates.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $17,822, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,845 average.
- It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a more modern infotainment setup.
The bottom line: You should buy the 2017 if you want a strong mix of value, space, and capability at a softened market price. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better price-first alternative. If you want newer tech and can spend more, the 2018 is the smarter upgrade path.
