CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Challenger
overall

Summary
With 179 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,741, 15.1% of 2017 Dodge Challenger listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Challenger 4.64 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
63.7% of 2017 Dodge Challenger listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Challenger stands out for leaning hard into retro muscle-car style while still feeling like a modern car. It is described as the most overtly retro car in its class, and the modern Challenger’s cabin is presented as part of that appeal, with orangey-red seats adding to the old-school atmosphere. That combination gives it a distinctive personality that is more about image and attitude than blending in.
For 2017, all-wheel drive tones down the Challenger’s muscle with milder manners, which broadens its appeal for buyers who want the look and feel of a classic American coupe with a calmer edge. Owner feedback also points to strong performance, comfort, and daily-driving capability, along with stable handling. At the same time, some drivers note that it can feel slightly underpowered for its size, fuel costs can be high because it requires premium gas, and the interior may lack some modern features.

Very retro! The SXT package with its 6 cylinder was plenty as the vehicle has plenty to keep it going, but it's more of a retro 70's showcar and still draws attention!

The Challenger’s retro muscle-car personality is a major part of the appeal, and the overview points to a model that works especially well if you want a distinctive coupe with strong attitude rather than something that blends in. With 28.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that owners feel good about living with over time, with recurring praise for its dependable performance, comfort, and daily-driving usefulness. The expert drive notes also emphasize that the Challenger’s year-round AWD setup makes it a practical choice for buyers who want more confidence in mixed conditions, while still keeping the car’s character intact. The cost-effectiveness notes add that the model’s steady improvements in powertrains, technology, and comfort help it stay competitive.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car has been maintained well, since ownership costs and condition can vary a lot by trim and equipment.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?
At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the Challenger’s appeal is tied so closely to its style and presence, cosmetic condition matters as much as mechanical condition for many shoppers. It also makes sense to prioritize a careful test drive so you can judge how the car feels in everyday use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive, while the standard rear-wheel-drive trims keep the classic muscle-car setup; the GT also brings a calmer, more year-round-friendly personality.
- Powertrain: The GT uses a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic, and the expert notes say it can move the Challenger’s weight quickly enough while staying quiet and smooth.
- Safety package: The Challenger includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional.
- Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system comes standard on the GT with navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps.
Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus, R/T Plus Shaker, T/A, T/A Plus, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Demon, and GT.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s style at the lowest starting price, but it’s the most basic way into the lineup.
- GT: This is the best-value trim if you want the most useful all-around setup, because it adds all-wheel drive and a more year-round-friendly driving character.
- R/T: This is the move if you want V8 power and the classic muscle-car feel without jumping straight to the highest-performance trims.
- R/T Shaker: Choose this if the shaker hood and extra visual attitude matter to you as much as the driving experience.
- R/T Plus: This is for buyers who want a better-equipped V8 model with more comfort and convenience.
- R/T Plus Shaker: Pick this if you want the upgraded equipment of the Plus trim along with the shaker hood’s added presence.
- T/A: This trim leans into a more distinctive appearance and performance-oriented personality.
- T/A Plus: This is the better choice if you want the T/A look with more equipment.
- T/A 392: This is the step up for buyers who want a stronger performance focus.
- SRT 392: This is for shoppers who want a more serious performance setup and are willing to pay for it.
- SRT Hellcat: This is the extreme-power choice for buyers who want the most dramatic straight-line performance.
- SRT Hellcat Widebody: Choose this if you want the Hellcat experience with even more visual presence.
- SRT Demon: This is the most specialized performance model in the lineup.
- GT: If you want the most practical daily-driver angle, this is still the trim to focus on because of its AWD setup.
The GT is the trim that best matches the expert-tested balance of comfort, quietness, and all-weather usability, while the V8 trims make more sense if you care most about traditional muscle-car character. Safety-wise, many driver-assist features remain optional, so check each listing carefully for equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,407 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,177, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?
The current average of $20,565 sits slightly below last year's $21,306.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than average, especially if they’re clean and well documented.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?
The 2017 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in the frontal crash rating.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
The Challenger’s safety picture is mixed. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it the highest Good rating in only the moderate front overlap and side crash tests, while it scored Marginal on the small front overlap test and Acceptable on the roof strength and headrest/seat tests. The body structure was rated Poor in the small front overlap test, which is a notable weakness. Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 adds AWD in GT form, which broadens the car’s appeal for year-round use.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,039, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,565 average.
- It emphasizes authentic retro muscle-car character with fresh trim and wheel options.
The bottom line: If you want the better current-market value and the added practicality of the 2017’s AWD option, this is the stronger buy. If your priority is simply the classic Challenger look and you find a well-kept 2016 at the right price, that can still make sense for a style-first shopper.
