How much does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 6.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,824 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns 4.3/5 from owners and 8.3/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, features, good gas mileage, smooth driving experience, and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In use-case terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a conventional midsize sedan that feels modern and easy to live with rather than merely practical. The market also shows 26.6% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car people feel they can count on for comfort, good gas mileage, and a generally dependable daily-driving experience. The expert drive notes also describe it as a well-executed, refined family sedan with strong mechanical polish and a composed chassis. Chevrolet’s maintenance and ownership appeal is helped by the car’s broad value proposition, especially if you’re looking for a used sedan that should be straightforward to live with over time.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure you avoid examples that have been poorly maintained or show signs of prior damage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or has inconsistent cosmetic wear. Focus on panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the cabin and electronics match the seller’s description. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as price because the market includes a mix of cleaner and riskier examples.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Malibu L starts lower, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add equipment and polish; the Premier stands out for its more upscale presentation and stronger feature content.
• Powertrain: The Malibu offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, a Hybrid rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder exclusive to Premier with 250 horsepower and a 9-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. These packages are bundled on Premier rather than standard across the lineup.
• Infotainment: The MyLink system adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier’s 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if your priority is getting into the Malibu at the lowest possible price, but you should expect the fewest features.
• LS: This is the first step up and a sensible choice if you want a better balance of value and everyday equipment without stretching too far.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you the most balanced mix of features and price.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the Malibu’s efficiency-focused setup.
• Premier: This is the most upscale choice, with the strongest performance-oriented powertrain in the lineup and the richest feature content.

For safety-package shoppers, note that Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II are bundled on the Premier trim rather than being standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,824 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.63% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,602, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $10,602 sits slightly below last year's $11,355.

That softer pricing suggests the Malibu is in a buyer-friendly phase, which can help you if you’re shopping now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can still protect value by staying ahead of maintenance and avoiding accident history. The current market also shows that demand remains real, especially for cleaner examples with the right equipment.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes Rear Seat Reminder to help prevent children or pets from being left in the car, and it also offers a full suite of driver-assistance features through the Driver Confidence packages. Those features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. The main caveat is that the IIHS notes the headlights are rated Poor, which keeps the car from an even stronger result.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its refined redesign, strong tech, and well-rounded driving manners.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,614, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,602 average.
• The redesign brought a more modern cabin, better efficiency, and stronger tech and safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Malibu with strong tech, comfort, and safety, the 2017 is the smarter target. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can still make sense because it delivers much of the same redesign-era appeal for less money.

How does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu compare to the 2017 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu 8.3/10 and the 2017 Toyota Camry 7.5/10.

The Malibu gives you the stronger expert score, better fuel economy in the city and on the highway, and a much lower average used price. The Camry counters with more horsepower, a higher share of good and great deals, and a larger pool of accident-free listings. If you want the better value and more modern tech feel, the Malibu has the edge; if you want a more traditional rival with stronger market availability, the Camry remains a solid alternative.
