Why it stands out
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that Chevrolet had recently refined, with the brand described as perfecting its recipe just as buyers were moving toward family crossovers. It is also presented as a car that deserves more respect than it typically gets, thanks to its most recent redesign for the 2016 model year. That combination gives the Malibu a straightforward appeal: it aims to be a polished, modern family sedan in a market that was increasingly looking elsewhere.
What makes the 2017 Malibu appealing is the balance of comfort, features, and efficiency that owners commonly praise. Reviewers also pointed to its smooth driving experience and modern tech options such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. At the same time, some owners noted that it can be noisy and a little slow to get moving from a stop, and a few felt the price should be lower.

The car has all the features Im looking for, from great gas mileage to Apple CarPlay. Thee car is a great value for the money. The only feature this car is missing is an inverter, but those are only important on long road trips. I was also looking at the Hyundai Elantra, and this car is a close competition.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Generally — 4.3/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from our experts point to a well-liked sedan with broad appeal.
The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the Malibu for its comfort, features, smooth driving experience, and good gas mileage. The overview also frames it as a polished, modern family sedan, which fits shoppers who want a straightforward commuter or family car with contemporary tech. At the same time, the market context shows 25.4% of listings are good or great deals, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with recurring praise for comfort, features, and good gas mileage. The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by describing the Malibu as enjoyable to drive and competitive in its segment, with a refined overall character. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that Chevrolet’s midsize recipe is strong enough to make the car feel legitimately competitive.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid examples with hidden wear or neglected maintenance, especially since condition can vary widely across listings.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing photos or description leave any gaps. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s features and driving behavior match the seller’s claims. Because the Malibu’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, tech, and refinement, you’ll want to make sure the example you choose still feels clean and well-kept.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Malibu L starts lower in the lineup, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add equipment and polish as you move up. The Premier test car was equipped with the top trim level and had a more upscale feel, while the base car is the one most likely to leave you wanting more features.
- Powertrain: The Malibu offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, a Hybrid rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder exclusive to Premier. The 2.0-liter setup delivers the strongest performance and a more energetic feel, while the Hybrid is the efficiency play.
- Safety package: The Driver Confidence package adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist that can steer the car into a space. These packages are bundled on Premier, so lower trims may not have the same coverage.
- Infotainment: The Malibu’s MyLink system adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connection. The setup is described as simple to use and highly functional, which is a major reason this car scores so well for technology.
- Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier test car averaged 27.3 mpg on the test loop. Those figures make efficiency one of the Malibu’s strongest selling points, especially if you want a midsize sedan that doesn’t feel thirsty.
Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: Malibu L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- Malibu L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if your priority is getting into the Malibu at the lowest price. It gives you the core sedan experience, but you should expect fewer of the upscale touches and advanced features that make the higher trims more appealing.
- LS: This is the next step up and a sensible choice if you want a little more equipment without jumping too far in price. It should suit you if you want a balanced daily driver and don’t need the most powerful engine or the richest feature set.
- LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you a stronger mix of comfort, features, and price. If you want the Malibu’s modern feel without paying Premier money, this is the trim to focus on first.
- Hybrid: Choose this if fuel efficiency is your top priority and you want the Malibu’s sedan packaging with a strong mpg story. It’s the trim for shoppers who care most about saving fuel and are willing to trade away some practicality.
- Premier: This is the trim to buy if you want the strongest performance and the most upscale experience. It gets the exclusive turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, and the expert review makes clear that this version is the most satisfying to drive.
The safety packages are bundled on Premier, so if advanced driver-assistance features matter to you, that trim deserves extra attention.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,853 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,801.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $11,048 sits slightly below last year's $11,688.
That price movement suggests the Malibu has softened enough to help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays soft. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. The model’s broad appeal, comfort, and tech-forward reputation should continue to support demand among used buyers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS, and the federal government gives it five-star ratings across the board, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Malibu’s safety equipment is a major strength. Rear Seat Reminder helps alert you if you may have left a child or pet in the car, and the available Driver Confidence package adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist that can steer the car into a space.
One caveat is that the headlights are rated Poor by IIHS, which is why the car falls short of an even stronger safety distinction.
Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the Malibu deserves more respect because its redesign made it a polished, modern family sedan.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,639, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,048 average.
- It was fully redesigned with fresh engines, stronger styling, and a more spacious interior.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2017 is the safer pick because it combines strong tech, good owner satisfaction, and a softer price trend. If your main goal is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value alternative worth cross-shopping closely.
