Is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse reliable?

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, spaciousness, and a smooth ride that should make it easy to count on over time. The expert evaluation also describes the car as structurally rock solid, which reinforces the sense that the redesigned LaCrosse is built to handle long-term use with confidence.

If you buy used, the main ownership risk is less about the core mechanical package and more about making sure the electronics and condition are clean before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Buick LaCrosse?

At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Pay close attention to the electronic systems, since owner feedback mentions temperature-gauge issues and error messages, and also inspect paint quality carefully.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base, Preferred, Essence, and Premium trims are listed, and the cheaper versions give up equipment that helps define the car’s premium feel. The top Premium trim is described as loaded with every option package, while the lower trims are the ones where you’re most likely to feel the feature gap.
• Powertrain: The car uses a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard with available all-wheel drive. The V6 is described as refined and strong, and the car’s lighter structure helps it feel more capable than its size suggests.
• Safety package: The car can be fitted with a long list of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies, including full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot information warning, a safety-alert seat, a rear-seat reminder, Teen Driver technology, and OnStar trial services. The loaded test car had all of them, so you should confirm which items are present on the specific listing you’re considering.
• Infotainment: Buick’s IntelliLink system includes a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a responsive touchscreen, logical menus, and separate climate controls. The system is described as easy to use, and available extras include a Bose Centerpoint audio system, heads-up display, wireless charging, and automatic parking assist.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive test car was rated at 25 mpg in combined driving by the EPA, though it averaged 23.2 mpg on the evaluation loop.

Which 2017 Buick LaCrosse trim should I buy?

The 2017 Buick LaCrosse is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Preferred, Essence, and Premium.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the LaCrosse’s core size, comfort, and upscale design at the lowest starting price. It’s the trim most likely to leave you wanting more of the premium equipment that defines the car’s appeal.
• Preferred: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of value and equipment without jumping all the way to the top. It should be the best-value choice for many shoppers because it moves you closer to the LaCrosse’s upscale personality without requiring the highest spend.
• Essence: This is the middle-ground choice for buyers who want a more polished feel and are willing to pay for it. It makes sense if you want a richer feature set but don’t need every available luxury item.
• Premium: This is the one to buy if you want the fullest expression of the car’s comfort, technology, and luxury feel. The test car was a Premium with every option package, and that’s the trim that best matches the LaCrosse’s upscale mission.

The safety content also notes that the car can be fitted with a long list of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Buick LaCrosse?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 300 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.52% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,204, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse's resale value?

The current average of $15,416 sits slightly below last year's $16,317.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you shop carefully now, you may have a better chance of limiting your own depreciation hit later, especially if you choose a clean, well-equipped example with strong condition and history.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse safe?

The 2017 Buick LaCrosse earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and driver protection in a side-impact collision.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Buick equips the LaCrosse with a broad driver-assistance suite that includes full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot information warning, a safety-alert seat, a rear-seat reminder, Teen Driver technology, and OnStar trial services. The loaded test car had all of these features, but you should confirm the exact equipment on any used listing because availability can vary by trim and option package.

The expert testing also notes that lane-departure prevention can react awkwardly in narrowing lanes, so that’s worth keeping in mind if you’re evaluating the system’s behavior on a test drive.

Should I buy a 2017 Buick LaCrosse or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.52% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned 2017 model is presented as a more premium, more broadly appealing LaCrosse that bridges Buick’s mainstream and luxury identities.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want the redesigned LaCrosse’s premium feel, strong owner satisfaction, and softened pricing in a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also keep shopping nearby years, but the 2017 stands out as the more modern and more compelling version of this sedan.
