Why it stands out
The 2017 Buick LaCrosse stands out as a redesigned full-size sedan that aims to feel more premium than Buick’s old image might suggest. The test-drive summary describes it as a bridge between less-expensive Chevrolets and more-expensive Cadillacs, and says the redesign creates a premium car with the power to appeal beyond the AARP crowd. That makes this LaCrosse distinctive as a Buick that is trying to move the brand’s reputation forward rather than simply lean on tradition.
What also makes the 2017 LaCrosse appealing is the sense of change it represents. The source calls it a perfect example of Buick’s metamorphosis, which frames the car as part of a broader shift in the brand’s identity. Owner feedback supports that impression, with praise for its spaciousness, classy design, smooth ride, comfort, and advanced features. At the same time, some owners report concerns with the electronic system, including the temperature gauge and error messages, along with a few paint quality issues.

Valve cover gasket's leaking oil and need to be replaced. Other than that pretty nice car. Some curb rash on bumper and rims, scraps/ scratches in paint but to be expected for a car of this age and miles.

Weve now had 3 LaCrosse vehicles ( the 3rd we just purchased). The first 2 we wonderfully dependable and we experienced NO problems with either vehicle (99,000+ miles on #2). They seem to get better, more comfortable, more quieter and more features each year.

The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that many drivers find comfortable, well-equipped, and easy to live with over time, while also noting some concerns with the electronic system and a few paint quality issues. The expert drive notes that the car is structurally solid and benefits from a robust architecture, which supports the sense that it’s built to hold up well.
The expert evaluation also describes the drivetrain and chassis as refined and well sorted, which is the kind of dependability language used when a car feels composed in everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure any electronics, warning messages, and cosmetic issues have been addressed before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Buick LaCrosse?
At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or unresolved electronic issues. Pay close attention to how the cabin electronics behave, since owner feedback mentions temperature-gauge concerns and error messages. You should also inspect paint quality and overall condition carefully, because cosmetic issues can be more noticeable on a premium-leaning sedan like this.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Buick offers the LaCrosse in Base, Preferred, Essence, and Premium trims, and the lower trims give up some of the richer equipment found higher up the range. The loaded Premium example shows how much the car can gain with options such as heated and massaging seats, a panoramic sunroof, automatic parking assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking capability.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 310 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available for an extra cost.
- Safety package: The car can be fitted with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot warning, a safety-alert seat, a rear-seat reminder, Teen Driver technology, and OnStar services. Some of these features are not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: Buick’s IntelliLink system includes a responsive touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and subscription services. The system also supports a wireless charging slot, and available extras include a Bose Centerpoint audio system, heads-up display, and automatic parking assist.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive test car was rated at 25 mpg in combined driving, though it averaged 23.2 mpg on the evaluation loop.
Which 2017 Buick LaCrosse trim should I buy?
The 2017 Buick LaCrosse is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Preferred, Essence, and Premium.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but the source makes clear that stepping up the trim ladder is where the LaCrosse starts to feel more fully equipped. If you want the lowest starting price and can live without the richer comfort and convenience features, this is the simplest way in.
- Preferred: This trim is the first place to look if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping all the way to the top. It should suit you if you want a more upscale feel than the base model without paying for every available luxury feature.
- Essence: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and is likely to capture much of the LaCrosse’s premium character without the highest price. If you want the sweet spot between equipment and cost, this is the one to focus on first.
- Premium: This is the trim for you if you want the most complete version of the car, including the richest comfort, convenience, and driver-assistance content described in the test car. It suits you best if you want the LaCrosse to feel as close to a luxury sedan as possible.
The safety content also notes that the car can be fitted with a long list of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies, but some of those features are not included on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Buick LaCrosse?
Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market even though there are some decent opportunities if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 322 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.82% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 63.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,203.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse's resale value?
The current average of $16,435 sits slightly above last year's $15,985.
That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. It also means buyers are still willing to pay for the LaCrosse’s comfort, size, and upscale presentation, especially when the car is well kept and properly equipped.
Because the price trend is positive, a clean example with strong equipment and good condition should remain easier to move than a neglected one. If you buy carefully now, you’re more likely to preserve value when it’s time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Buick LaCrosse safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and driver protection in a side-impact collision, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The LaCrosse can be fitted with a broad driver-assistance suite that includes full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot warning, a safety-alert seat, a rear-seat reminder, Teen Driver technology, and OnStar services. The expert notes also point out that some of these features were present on the loaded test car, which means trim and option selection matter if you want the fullest safety package.
The IIHS results cited in the source are strong in moderate overlap frontal impact and side impact, but the crash-avoidance and mitigation rating is only Basic. That means you should pay close attention to which safety features are actually installed on the specific car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Buick LaCrosse or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.82% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The redesigned 2017 model is described as a clear example of Buick’s brand transformation, with a premium feel and strong road manners.
The bottom line: If you want the most compelling mix of price, comfort, and upscale character in this generation, the 2017 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and shop for the cleanest, best-equipped example rather than focusing on the badge year alone.
