CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 165 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,525.00, 34.5% of 2017 BMW 6 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 6 Series 4.88 / 5 stars.
52.1% of 2017 BMW 6 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 6 Series stands out as a style-first luxury performance car, and in BMW’s lineup it represents the third-generation coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe family. That generation was expanded beyond the two-door body styles with the addition of the low-slung four-door Gran Coupe, giving the 6 Series a broader range of personalities while keeping its rakish profile. It was also offered with xDrive all-wheel drive on many versions, and BMW’s Alpina B6 gave well-heeled buyers an even more exclusive factory-tuned option.
What makes the 2017 model appealing is the way it blends strong performance with a comfortable, upscale cabin. The mainstream 6 Series models used an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW’s 2016 tech update brought a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0. The car also offered driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control, though most were optional. At the same time, it remained a stylish grand tourer with a soft design that had aged better than some more controversial BMW shapes.
There are tradeoffs, though. The back seat is snug even in the Gran Coupe, and the car is expensive to maintain. Reliability data on the model as a whole is thin, but the 640i models are described as the most trouble-free of the bunch, while the M6 is the most high-strung. For buyers who want exclusivity, luxury, and engaging driving dynamics in one package, the 2017 BMW 6 Series has a lot of appeal, even if practicality is not its strong suit.

Car is beautiful design inside and out...I compared to Mercedes CLS 400. BMW heads up display was great, seat comfort a little better than CLS, instant throttle response (no turbo lag) and superior brakes...more blind spots and felt heavier than CLS (although specs would disagree)

Great styling, great performance. Is not a boxster Porsche, but not a luxury Mercedes SLK. Is the perfect mix of sports car and luxury.

Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 4.88/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the stylish design, impressive performance, comfort, and handling, and many describe it as a satisfying mix of sports car feel and luxury-car refinement. That lines up well if you want a style-first grand tourer that still feels rewarding to drive, especially if you value a comfortable cabin and strong performance over maximum practicality. With 24.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, performance, and the kind of driving experience people tend to keep for the long haul. The most relevant reliability takeaway for used buyers is that ownership costs can still be meaningful, so a well-documented service history matters as much as the car’s overall reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?
At 50% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear or deferred maintenance. Because this is a luxury performance car, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is usually the safer buy than a cheaper car with unclear records.

What is the 2017 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $22,327 sits slightly below last year's $24,345.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples should still attract attention because this model has strong enthusiast appeal and a premium image.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current value, owner satisfaction, and style-first luxury performance, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can widen your search to nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
