Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many buyers, with repeated praise for comfort, quality, and the sense that you can count on it as a family SUV. The expert drive notes also emphasize how well the cabin isolates road, wind, and engine noise, which supports the impression of a well-built vehicle that feels composed over time.

You should still budget carefully for an older luxury SUV, since long-term ownership risk can rise if prior maintenance was skipped or wear items were neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a premium trim and more equipment to maintain. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven tire wear, interior wear, and any warning lights or electronic glitches during a test drive. Because this is a luxury SUV with a lot of standard technology, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum already brings a luxury feel, but higher trims add more upscale materials and extra comfort and convenience equipment. If you want the best value, look closely at the trim that gives you the features you’ll actually use without paying for extras you don’t need.
• Powertrain: You can choose among a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, a more powerful supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, and a hybrid option. The gas engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the hybrid is the efficiency-focused choice.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control. Optional packages add blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, front park assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, and optional Apple CarPlay is available. The system is designed for easy swipe-and-tap use, and the cabin also includes a built-in hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC90 is rated at 20 mpg city/25 highway, and the expert drive notes that premium fuel is recommended.

Which 2016 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the starting point, but it still feels well equipped for a luxury SUV. It gives you the core XC90 experience with the standard safety and comfort features that make this model stand out, so it’s the trim to target if you want the most accessible entry into the lineup.
• Inscription: This trim is the best fit if you want the most upscale cabin feel. It adds more luxury-oriented touches and is the better choice if interior refinement matters most to you.
• R-Design: This is the sportier-looking and performance-focused trim. It suits you if you want a more aggressive appearance and a more driver-oriented feel.

The standard safety package is strong across the lineup, and several advanced driver-assistance features are available through optional packages rather than being standard on every trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 690 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,936, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $13,936 sits slightly below last year's $15,824.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned to limit your loss when it’s time to sell. The model’s premium image and family-friendly appeal should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 safe?

The Volvo XC90 earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ rating and Good marks in every category.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, LED daytime running lights, a suite of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, tire pressure monitoring, whiplash protection, and electronic stability control. Standard driver-assistance features include collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control.

Optional safety features include a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, front park assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot. The XC90’s safety story is one of its biggest strengths, and the only real caveat is that some of the more advanced aids are packaged as options rather than standard equipment.

Should I buy a 2016 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 XC90 stands out as an all-new luxury SUV with impressive safety and technology, plus broad appeal from its seating flexibility and powertrain choices.

The bottom line: The 2016 XC90 makes the most sense if you want the first year of this redesigned luxury SUV and you value its safety, comfort, and upscale cabin. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market and broad inventory to shop patiently for a cleaner, better-equipped example.
