Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Volvo’s maintenance coverage includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance, which can help early ownership costs feel more manageable.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been cared for well, since premium SUVs can become expensive if prior maintenance or condition has been neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower price than the rest of the market. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with a premium SUV. Because this model was offered with multiple seating and drivetrain configurations, it’s also worth confirming that the specific layout matches your needs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum already includes a luxury cabin and a long list of standard safety features, while the Inscription adds more upscale touches and the R-Design brings a performance-focused character. The base trim is still well equipped, but the higher trims add more comfort and visual polish.
• Powertrain: The XC90 was offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in T5 models, a more powerful turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter in T6 models, and a hybrid option for buyers prioritizing efficiency. The gas engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control. Optional packages add blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, and optional Apple CarPlay is available. The system also includes a built-in hotspot and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas model is rated at 20 mpg city and 25 highway, and the hybrid option is aimed at buyers who want better efficiency.

Which 2016 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

• Momentum: This is the best-value choice if you want the XC90’s core luxury, safety, and family-friendly practicality without paying for extra appearance or comfort upgrades. It already includes a strong standard safety list and a well-appointed cabin.
• Inscription: Choose this if you want the most upscale feel, since it adds more premium interior touches and a more refined presentation. It suits you best if comfort and luxury details matter more than sporty styling.
• R-Design: Pick this if you want the sportier-looking version and are drawn to the performance-focused character. It also has its own climate package option, which is useful if you want added cold-weather comfort.
