Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta a good car?

You also get recurring praise for its solid feel, fun driving experience, and great fuel economy. Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?

User feedback highlights the Jetta’s solid feel, great fuel economy, and powerful engine, while also pointing to concerns about missing features and turbo responsiveness. The expert evaluation also describes the new turbocharged engine as punchy and responsive, and the cost-effectiveness notes say Volkswagen’s reliability and build issues from earlier years have been left behind, with the current crop showing tremendous improvement. Volkswagen also had a financing incentive program in place, which can help soften ownership costs if you buy at the right time.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the turbo powertrain and feature set still match your expectations after years of use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, repair quality, and any signs of prior collision work. Because the listing pool includes a meaningful number of cars with accident history, condition matters as much as price. It also helps to focus on whether the car has the features you want, since some owners specifically noted missing equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S starts with 15-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, full power, air conditioning, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The S Tech Package adds a 6.3-inch touchscreen, USB port, satellite radio, rear-view camera, and smartphone integration, while the SE adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats. The SE Connectivity package adds a sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, vinyl upholstery, and a 6-speaker stereo with upgraded smartphone integration. The 1.8T Sport adds the larger engine, sport suspension, and 17-inch alloys, while the 1.8T SEL adds softer suspension tuning, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof.
• Powertrain: The new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 1,400 rpm, with 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined using the 6-speed automatic and 33 combined with the 5-speed manual. The 1.8-liter turbo adds 20 hp up high and returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined with the 6-speed automatic. The 2.0-liter turbo offers 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque with a standard 6-speed manual, or 24 city mpg/33 highway/27 combined with the 6-speed DSG.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package on 1.8T trims adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. Base trims do not get the full driver-assistance suite.
• Infotainment: The upgraded setup centers on a 6.3-inch touchscreen with an actual USB port and full smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base setup uses a 5-inch touchscreen, and the larger screen is a meaningful upgrade if you want easier phone integration.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined with the automatic and 33 combined with the manual. The 1.8-liter turbo returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined, while the 2.0-liter turbo returns 24 city mpg/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, 1.8T Sport, 1.8T SEL, 1.4T S.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics with a 5-inch touchscreen, full power, air conditioning, heated mirrors, and keyless entry. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Jetta, but the feature set is clearly the thinnest.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats without pushing you into the more expensive turbo-focused trims. If you want a balanced mix of comfort and value, this is the one to target.
• 1.8T Sport: Choose this if you want the larger engine and a sport suspension, plus 17-inch alloys. It’s the right pick if you care more about driving feel than comfort extras.
• 1.8T SEL: This trim adds a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. It suits you if you want a more upscale Jetta without going all the way to the top of the range.
• 1.4T S: This trim is the most affordable way to get the new turbo engine, and it keeps the Jetta’s efficiency and responsiveness front and center. It’s a smart choice if you want the improved powertrain first and foremost.

The safety package on 1.8T trims is the one to watch, since that’s where the Driver Assistance features appear.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,022 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.33% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,817, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $9,228 sits slightly below last year's $9,448.

That tells you the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. The Jetta’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but the current trend still favors shoppers more than sellers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash tests and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment also includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is tied to higher trims, so you should verify exactly which features are on the car you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The new 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and touchscreen upgrades make it feel more modern and more competitive.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,017, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,228 average.
• It’s a versatile daily driver with engaging personality and practical appeal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,265, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,228 average.
• It adds a standard reversing camera and a slimmer, updated trim lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, modern features, and strong safety, the 2016 is the sweet spot. If your priority is spending less, the 2015 is the value play. If you want the added convenience of the 2017’s standard reversing camera and don’t mind paying more, that’s the cleaner upgrade path.
