CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen
overall

Summary
With 227 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,690.00, 32.2% of 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagens for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
65.6% of 2016 Golf SportWagen models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Amidst the crossover craze, the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen stands out by offering a surprising amount of car for the price. It is based on the seventh-generation Golf and follows the Jetta SportWagen, which gives it the familiar Golf driving character in a wagon body. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want practicality without giving up the road-going manners that help the Golf nameplate stand apart.
Its biggest strength is the blend of practicality, cargo space, and fun-to-drive nature. The available description also points to impressive storage space, along with the latest infotainment and safety technologies, so it is not just about utility. The main limitation implied by the comparison is that crossovers may sit higher, but they do not offer the same cargo space and storage solutions as wagons, which is exactly where the Golf SportWagen makes its case.

A car with a dash that doesnt look like it came out of Star Trek? Sign me up. Sporty feel at good price? Love it. Room for activities and storing larger items, but with decent fuel economy and smaller profile unlike an SUV? Thats a steal. Ive been driving VW wagons forever, and nothing really compares to the all-around utility offered in this vehicle.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
The Golf SportWagen is positioned as a practical wagon with impressive storage space, car-like road manners, and the kind of utility that helps it stand apart from crossovers. It also brings the latest infotainment and safety technologies, which makes it appealing if you want everyday usefulness without giving up a more engaging driving feel.
The market shows 31.6% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Golf SportWagen is described as a well-rounded wagon with practical packaging, and the expert review emphasizes its solid road manners and useful technology. Its 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and available automatic or manual transmission give you straightforward mechanical choices, while the overall setup is aimed at everyday usability rather than complexity.
The standard equipment also includes automatic post-collision braking and a crash response system, which adds reassurance in daily use. For a used buyer, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the car has been maintained properly and that any prior damage or neglected repairs are identified before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any collision repairs. Focus on overall condition, because the value of this wagon depends heavily on whether its practicality and safety equipment have been preserved cleanly over time.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay, a backup camera, and a multifunction steering wheel, while higher trims add keyless entry, push-button start, leatherette seating, a dual-panel sunroof, heated front seats, premium audio, rear power outlet, power-adjustable seats, and navigation.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, and you can get either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual shift mode. Fuel economy is 25 miles per gallon city/36 highway/29 combined with the manual, and the automatic keeps city and combined mileage the same while highway drops to 35.
- Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds forward-collision warning with autonomous braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear park-distance alert, and a parking steering assistant. It is available on the SE and SEL trims.
- Infotainment: S and SE trims use a Composition media unit with App Connect and a 6.5-inch touchscreen, plus Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. All versions have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror-Link, while the SEL adds the Discover media unit with navigation and voice-control destination entry.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual returns 25 miles per gallon city/36 highway/29 combined, while the automatic keeps city and combined figures the same and lowers highway mileage to 35.
Which 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen trim should I buy?
The 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen is offered in 4 trim levels: S, Limited Edition, SE, and SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S trim is the most stripped-down choice, but it still includes Apple CarPlay, a backup camera, and a multifunction steering wheel; it does not include the added convenience and comfort features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value if you want the strongest mix of comfort and equipment, because it adds a dual-panel sunroof, heated front seats, a Fender premium audio system, and a rear power outlet.
- Premium/top trim: The SEL is the most upscale choice, adding 18-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable front seats, and the Discover media system with touchscreen navigation.
The Driver Assistance Package is available on the SE and SEL trims.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen's resale value?
The current average of $10,652 sits slightly above last year's $10,137.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy well and keep the car in strong condition. The combination of practical packaging, wagon rarity, and broad appeal among shoppers who want utility without a crossover shape can help keep demand steady.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Golf SportWagen comes standard with electronic stability control, a full array of front and side impact airbags, automatic post-collision braking, and a crash response system. The available Driver Assistance Package adds forward-collision warning with autonomous braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear park-distance alert, and a parking steering assistant.
That package is available on the SE and SEL trims, so if safety tech matters most to you, you should focus your search there.
