How much does the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen cost in today's market?
Used Volkswagen Golf SportWagen prices span a wide range depending on model year. Here's what the market looks like right now:
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Round Range |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | $10,953 | $10,401 – $12,571 |

That puts the model's pricing in a fairly tight band across the years shown here, with used examples clustering close to the same general level. Recently, prices have come down for the 2015, 2016, and 2017 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.

Yes — the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen earns strong owner approval across its model years, and the appeal centers on practicality, cargo space, and enjoyable driving manners. The all-generations owner rating is 4.8/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Golf SportWagen for its spaciousness, fuel efficiency, and balanced comfort-and-technology mix, especially in higher trims. The model also stands out for offering a carlike driving feel with useful cargo room, which makes it a compelling choice if you want utility without moving into a crossover. Expert reviews rate the 2019 and 2016 models among the highest across all years.
The trade-offs show up most clearly in the newer expert-reviewed years, where advanced safety features are not standard and performance is described as fairly pedestrian.
30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Volkswagen Golf SportWagen models reliable?

- Owners rate the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a car with an incomplete history, so a careful records check is especially worthwhile.
What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
Across all model years, at 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |

| 2018 | 60.2% |
| 2017 | 59.8% |
| 2016 | 63.1% |
| 2015 | 63.9% |
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Driver Assistance package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection
- Infotainment: 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 29 mpg city, 37 highway, 32 combined
Which Volkswagen Golf SportWagen trim should I buy?
The 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen offers these trims:
- S: The entry trim comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, heated power-folding side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, black roof rails, LED taillights, LED daytime running lights, and one-touch up/down power windows for all four windows. It is the best-value trim if you want the core wagon experience with strong equipment.
- S 4Motion: This trim adds all-wheel drive, heated front washer nozzles, and heated front seats, making it the best-value choice if you want added capability and cold-weather comfort.
- SE: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, fog lights, LED headlights with the adaptive front lighting system, keyless entry with push-button start, and leatherette seating.
What Volkswagen Golf SportWagen do most buyers choose?
The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen years with the most listings are 2016, 2015, and 2017.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 236 | 31.8% |
| 2015 | 230 | 30.4% |
| 2017 | 179 | 34.1% |
| 2018 | 123 | 37.4% |
| 2019 | 55 | 34.5% |
Higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they usually offer more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also tend to be the years buyers cross-shop most often, so you get a clearer picture of typical market value.
What is the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | $10,953 | −10.66% |
| 2015 | $10,321 | −9.92% |
| 2016 | $10,480 | −1.04% |
Prices are moving lower across the years shown, which is good news if you're shopping used and want more value for your money. The sharp double-digit drop on one year stands out, while the other two show smaller declines. That pattern suggests the market has softened overall, with some years adjusting more quickly than others.
The 2016, 2015, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen safe?
- 2019: 7/10
- 2016: 8/10
The 2019 model includes a driver-assistance suite with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam control on the SE trim.
For the safest used buy, the 2016 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used Volkswagen Golf SportWagen now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2017 model is at −10.66% versus a year ago, and the 2016 model is at −1.04%.
- Deal availability: The 2017 model has 34.1% good and great deals, and the 2016 model has 31.8%.

- Tech: The Golf SportWagen comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and one USB port, and it runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: The SE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam control.

Reviewed a 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen on Jul 20, 2023
The 2019 Golf SportWagen is a near prefect car for our needs. it has sufficient power to be easily driven at freeway speeds all day. At the same time, it is small enough to be comfortable in city driving. The safety features and displays are state of the art, yet they recognize the driver as being the person in control. There is plenty of cargo space. With the rear seat folded, there is enough room for two adult bicycles in the back of the car. The car is very comfortable and the cloth sear option if VERY pleasant. The VW SportWagen is a VASTLY superior option to the panoply of ridiculous SUV choices, all of which are too big physically while having less cargo room. Good gas milage is a given. This may well be the last of the truly excellent small station wagons. The VW makes a good comparison with the Audi Avant and Allroad, but at a considerably reduced price point. There is not a car that I would rather have.
