Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.29/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert evaluation also describes it as capable and stout, which supports the idea that it’s built for long-term use rather than short-term novelty. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that repair costs and fuel use can weigh on ownership satisfaction, especially if the truck has been worked hard.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tundra?

At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on trucks that may have been used for towing or job-site duty. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck’s mechanical wear matches its mileage and use pattern. Because owner feedback mentions repair costs and oil leaks, it’s smart to pay close attention to underhood condition and service records.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Platinum trim adds a spacious back seat, a 5.5-foot double-walled bed, and the 5.7-liter V8, while the SR5 adds fog lights, HD and satellite radio, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The Limited adds automatic headlights, dual-zone climate controls, a power-sliding rear window, and navigation.
• Powertrain: The truck uses a 381-hp 5.7-liter V8 with 401 lb-ft of torque and a 6-speed automatic, and it can tow up to 10,500 pounds. The tradeoff is fuel economy, with a 13 mpg city, 17 highway, and 15 combined rating.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include traction and stability control, trailer brake and sway control, eight airbags, and full-length side airbags. Available features include a rear camera, front and rear parking sonar, and a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system includes real-time traffic and weather, and it uses a 7-inch screen. Standard tech includes heated mirrors and wipers, USB ports, and an auxiliary jack, while higher trims add more convenience and audio features.
• Fuel efficiency: The truck is rated at 13 mpg city, 17 highway, and 15 combined.

Which 2016 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tundra is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point if you want the core Tundra experience with useful extras like fog lights, HD and satellite radio, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. It makes sense if you want a lower-cost truck without giving up the basics.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds automatic headlights, dual-zone climate controls, a power-sliding rear window, and navigation. If you want a more comfortable daily driver without jumping all the way to the top trim, this is the one to target.
• Platinum: This trim brings the most upscale feel, including a spacious back seat, a 5.5-foot double-walled bed, and the 5.7-liter V8. It suits you best if you want the most fully equipped Tundra and plan to use it as both a truck and a family hauler.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tundra's resale value?

The current average of $25,189 sits slightly below last year's $25,855.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has become a bit easier to buy than it was a year ago, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year age. Trucks with strong utility and a loyal following can still hold demand well, but the market is clearly rewarding clean examples more than average ones.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.29/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.29/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings an upgraded Entune system, a larger gas tank, and an integrated brake controller on upper trims.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $23,568, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $25,189 average.
• It stands out most in TRD Pro trim, where special suspension upgrades and distinctive detailing give it a memorable personality.

The bottom line: If you want the newer truck with updated tech and a still-reasonable market price, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re drawn to the 2015’s TRD Pro character, that older model is the more budget-friendly path.
