Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Owners also consistently point to reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, which are exactly the traits you want if you plan to keep the truck for years. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Tacoma’s capability, reliability, and predictability, and notes that it isn’t likely to present unusual problems or unexpected major repairs. Toyota’s maintenance and durability reputation, along with the revised frame and composite bed, should give you added confidence, though a used 4WD truck will still deserve careful inspection for wear tied to age and use. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road or towing use. Focus on body condition, underbody wear, suspension components, and signs of hard use, since those are the areas most likely to reveal how the truck was treated. If you’re comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to trucks with cleaner histories and consistent maintenance records.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the work-focused SR to the better-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. Base trucks are more basic, while higher trims add features such as premium upholstery, blind-spot monitoring, and more refined interior appointments.
- Powertrain: You get a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or a new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 is the stronger and more efficient choice, and it pairs with a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission depending on configuration.
- Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. Available driver aids include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts.
- Infotainment: Standard tech includes Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition. Higher trims add a 6.1-inch touchscreen or a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and deeper smartphone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD. The V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the most basic choice, and it lacks the richer infotainment and comfort upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 is the best value for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and the Scout GPS Link navigation app.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale version, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to choose if you want the most trail-focused setup, with skidplates, Bilstein dampers, and a suspension tuned for rough terrain.
The TRD Off-Road also gets blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, which is a useful safety-package upgrade if you want more confidence in daily driving.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,176 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,400.96, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,284 sits slightly below last year's $24,738.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. Even so, the Tacoma’s strong reputation and loyal following should continue to support demand over time. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you should have a solid chance of preserving value better than many rivals.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It earns Good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for most tests, though it received a Marginal score for roof strength. It also carries the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Available 4WD features such as Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control can help you manage difficult terrain, but the roof-strength result is a reminder that you should still weigh crash protection carefully when shopping used pickups.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 redesign brings a stronger V6, improved refinement, and more modern tech than the prior generation.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,940, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,284 average.
- It stands out for rugged build quality and off-road capability.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Tacoma with newer tech, stronger refinement, and a more modern powertrain, the 2016 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable giving up some of the redesign’s improvements, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path.
