What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, frame condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering. Because this model is often bought for durability and utility, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SRs and SR5s feature fabric-trimmed seats, while the Limited gets premium leather. The TRD Off-Road adds extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension, so base trims are the ones most likely to feel sparse if you want more comfort or capability.
• Powertrain: You can choose a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or the new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 is the stronger and more efficient option, and both engines can be paired with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmissions are a 5-speed for the 4-cylinder and a 6-speed for the V6.
• Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The truck also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are mentioned among available premium features, so you should confirm whether a specific listing has them.
• Infotainment: SR5 models feature Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and the Scout GPS Link navigation app. TRD Tacomas get Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite, while Limited models carry the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition are standard, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD, while the V6 is rated at 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. The TRD 4WD Off-Road with the V6 is rated at 18 mpg city/23 highway.

Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the work-focused starting point, with fabric-trimmed seats, standard 4-way front seats, and Entune audio. It makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core durability and utility without paying for extras.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and the Scout GPS Link navigation app. It gives you a more usable infotainment setup without jumping into the pricier specialty trims.
• TRD Sport: This trim sits above the SR5 and moves you toward a more premium-feeling Tacoma with the same broad cabin and tech foundation, while keeping the lineup’s more road-oriented personality.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to choose if you want the Tacoma’s most trail-ready character. It adds extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension, and it’s the best fit for buyers who actually plan to use the truck off pavement.
• Limited: This is the range-topper, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. Choose it if you want the most comfort and the richest feature set.

The safety package centers on the Toyota Star Safety System™, plus airbags and active headrests, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are part of the available premium equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,265 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.58% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,331, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $23,719 sits slightly below last year's $24,347.

That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean a seller has less room to push for a premium. Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for durability and strong demand helps support pricing better than many rivals.

If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, the Tacoma’s reputation should continue to help it hold value over time. That matters because buyers in this segment often pay up for a truck with a proven ownership story.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma’s crash-test ratings weren’t yet available at the time of evaluation.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Tacoma includes the Toyota Star Safety System™, which brings vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats.

A key caveat is that pickups are naturally more rollover-prone than sedans, and the safety writeup also notes that all-terrain tires can trade some on-road grip for off-road traction. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to the exact equipment on the listing you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.58% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a redesigned third-generation Tacoma with more tech, a new V6, and a broader trim lineup.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $20,357, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,719 average.
• It is a final-year, off-road-focused Tacoma with a limited-production TRD Pro trim.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Tacoma with newer tech, stronger refinement, and broader trim choice, the 2016 is the better default pick. If your budget is tighter and you mainly want a rugged, off-road-oriented truck, the 2015 can still make sense as the cheaper alternative.
