Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?

Yes — 5/5. It earns an 7.5/10 expert rating, and the model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s appeal comes from its hybrid drivetrain wrapped in a practical crossover body, so you get efficiency without giving up the usefulness compact-SUV shoppers expect. Toyota positions it as a hybrid SUV that can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile, and that use-case framing is exactly what makes it compelling if you want one vehicle to handle commuting and everyday hauling.

31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The RAV4 Hybrid’s hybrid setup is presented as a practical, capable alternative to conventional compact SUVs, and the expert review emphasizes that it delivers both efficiency and everyday usability. Its 2.5-liter engine and electric-motor system are described as a strong combination, and the review also notes pleasing driving dynamics and solid handling for the segment.

Toyota’s in-house systems are described as capable for navigation and music playback, and the hybrid’s efficiency focus is paired with a straightforward ownership experience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the hybrid system and overall condition have been maintained properly, since repair costs can rise if prior care was inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on any listing with prior damage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, signs of body repair, and whether the hybrid system and electronics behave as they should during a test drive. If a listing has been in an accident, make sure the repairs were done cleanly and that nothing feels off in the way the vehicle drives or operates.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is described as a blend of form and function, and the Limited adds a two-tone interior with extensive leatherette and soft-touch materials for a near-luxury feel. The XLE is the more comfort-focused value play, while the Limited is the better pick if you want a more upscale interior.
• Powertrain: The hybrid setup uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with three electric motors for 194 net horsepower and electronic all-wheel drive. It is also rated at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, and the review notes that the XLE’s smaller wheels and larger tires may ride more comfortably than the Limited’s larger wheels.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The rear-view camera is standard, while the bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors is available.
• Infotainment: Both XLE and Limited trims feature Toyota’s 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system, with Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and app access. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, and the review says real-world driving returned around 33 and 34 mpg in combined city and highway use.

Which 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XLE: This is the better-value choice if you want the hybrid powertrain, the standard touchscreen navigation system, and the smaller wheels that the review says may ride more comfortably. It gives you the core RAV4 Hybrid experience without pushing you into the pricier trim.
• Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale cabin treatment, including the two-tone interior and more extensive leatherette and soft-touch materials. It suits you best if you care more about a near-luxury feel than minimizing purchase price.

Toyota Safety Sense P is the named safety suite, and it includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.

What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?

The current average of $18,477 sits slightly above last year's $18,197.

That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The year-over-year increase also indicates that buyers are still willing to pay for the RAV4 Hybrid’s mix of efficiency and utility. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position to preserve value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The RAV4 Hybrid also comes with a full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a rear-view camera, and the available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors adds extra help in tight parking situations.

The safety package is strong, but the bird’s-eye-view camera is not standard, so you may need to step up to a better-equipped listing if that feature matters to you.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.53% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for pairing hybrid efficiency with compact-SUV practicality, while Toyota says it can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile than a conventional crossover.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of efficiency, utility, and value in this model year, the 2016 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully for a well-kept listing near the low end of the range, because the market still offers some room to find a good deal.
