CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 276 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,339.00, 30.4% of 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
62.0% of 2016 RAV4 Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out by bringing a hybrid drivetrain to a crossover SUV in a way that aims to deliver both efficiency and everyday usefulness. Toyota presents it as a vehicle that can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile, which is the core of its appeal. Rather than feeling like a niche experiment, it is positioned as a compact SUV that tries to combine the strengths buyers want from the segment with the benefits of hybrid power.
What makes it especially distinctive is that Toyota says it is unlike other hybrid SUVs people may have seen before. The RAV4 Hybrid is described as competing in the hot-selling compact SUV segment, where it is framed against familiar names such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. That gives it a broader, more mainstream mission than a typical hybrid, while also suggesting that its value lies in offering hybrid efficiency without giving up the practicality shoppers expect from a crossover.
At the same time, the description leaves room for skepticism by asking whether it can really be the “magic bullet” Toyota suggests. That tension is part of what makes the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid interesting: it promises a rare blend of capability, versatility, and efficiency, but it also has to prove that those qualities come together in a way that matters to buyers.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on Oct 4, 2022
I was between this car and the 2020 Kia niro. I’ve only been driving the RAV4 hybrid for a few days but I’m so in love. It drives so smoothly and is incredibly quiet. The space inside is more comfortable than the niro with better acceleration and power in general. I’m currently averaging about 36MPG. It’s awesome.

How much does the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,356 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,812.76 |
| Year-Round High | $19,330.04 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,764 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.33% |
Prices are up 3.33% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 295 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $16,812.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model is positioned as a compact SUV that tries to blend hybrid efficiency with everyday usefulness, and the expert review frames it as a mainstream crossover rather than a niche hybrid experiment. It also scores 8/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
That combination makes sense if you want a hybrid SUV that still aims to feel practical, versatile, and broadly usable in the same space as other compact crossovers. The expert review also points to strong capability for the class, with the hybrid setup adding efficiency without giving up the everyday utility buyers expect.
31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert review presents the RAV4 Hybrid as a vehicle that pairs efficiency with capability and versatility, and it describes the hybrid system as a strong blend of performance and fuel economy. The powertrain is also presented as a serious step up in output versus the non-hybrid version, while still delivering strong fuel economy for the segment.
Toyota’s hybrid setup is described as capable and efficient, and the review notes that the vehicle remains pleasing to drive with well-weighted steering and good overall handling. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and related components have been maintained properly, since that’s the part of the vehicle that matters most over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the hybrid-specific equipment and electronics behave as expected during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as a strong blend of form and function, and the Limited adds a near-luxury feel with a two-tone interior, leatherette, and soft-touch materials. The XLE is the more basic choice, so you should pay attention to which comfort and finish upgrades are missing if you are comparing it with a Limited.
- Powertrain: The hybrid system uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with three electric motors for 194 net horsepower and electronic all-wheel drive. It is also rated at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, which is a major part of the appeal.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The review also notes a rear-view camera and an available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors.
- Infotainment: Both XLE and Limited trims feature Toyota’s 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system, with Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and app access. It does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, and the review says real-world driving returned around 33 and 34 mpg in combined city and highway use.
Which 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the better-value choice if you want the hybrid drivetrain, the 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system, and the core efficiency and capability story without paying for the more upscale cabin treatment. It also rides on smaller wheels with larger tires, which the review says can be better if you are sensitive to bumps.
- Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the more premium interior, including the two-tone cabin, leatherette, and soft-touch materials. It is the more upscale pick, but you should only pay extra if you value the added comfort and finish.
Toyota Safety Sense P brings pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 295 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.33% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 61.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,812.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $18,356 sits slightly above last year's $17,764.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition. The combination of hybrid efficiency, mainstream SUV usefulness, and solid market demand also helps keep it relevant to used shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The review also highlights the rear-view camera and the available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors, which can be especially helpful in tight parking situations.
The safety story is strongest if you want a compact SUV with a broad set of standard advanced features for the class. The review does not call out a major safety shortcoming, so the main thing to verify on a used example is that the driver-assistance features and camera systems work properly.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.33% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the hybrid version is the better blend of capability, efficiency, and versatility, especially if you were already shopping XLE or Limited.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of hybrid efficiency, everyday usefulness, and mainstream SUV appeal, the 2016 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully for a clean, well-priced example below the low end of the range, but prioritize condition and history over chasing the absolute cheapest listing.
