Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?

Yes — 5/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from experts, which points to a strong overall case for you if you want a hybrid SUV that still behaves like a mainstream compact crossover. The model is positioned as a practical, efficient, and versatile alternative to conventional compact SUVs, and the expert review emphasizes that Toyota is aiming it squarely at shoppers who want familiar utility with hybrid efficiency.

The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

That combination makes it especially appealing if you want a useful daily driver with hybrid thrift rather than a niche eco-car. 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert review describes the hybrid setup as capable and efficient, with the powertrain delivering strong performance for the segment while still returning impressive fuel economy. It also notes that the vehicle remains pleasing to drive, with well-weighted steering and composed handling, which supports the idea that it should age well as a used buy.

Toyota’s hybrid system is presented as a practical, proven approach rather than an experimental one, and the review also highlights the model’s strong blend of capability, efficiency, and versatility. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and overall condition have been maintained properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the hybrid system and electronics behave as they should during a test drive. Because this model is often bought for practicality and efficiency, you’ll want to make sure the condition matches the seller’s claims.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XLE and Limited are the trims explicitly identified here, and the Limited adds a more upscale cabin with a two-tone interior, leatherette, and soft-touch materials. If you want the best value, the XLE is the trim to focus on because it captures the core hybrid experience without pushing you into the pricier Limited.
• Powertrain: The hybrid setup uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with three electric motors for 194 net horsepower, and the review says it is more powerful than the non-hybrid RAV4 while also being more efficient. It also notes that the rear electric motor provides electronic all-wheel drive, while some drivers in harsher conditions may prefer the mechanical AWD setup of the non-hybrid model.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The review also points out the value of the available bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors, especially for city parking.
• Infotainment: Both XLE and Limited trims feature a 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system with Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and app access. The system does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 34 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, and the review says real-world driving returned around 33 to 34 mpg in combined city and highway use.

Which 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XLE: This is the best-value choice because it gives you the core hybrid SUV experience without the higher price of the Limited. It still includes the 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system and the same basic hybrid capability, so it’s the trim most buyers should start with.
• Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale cabin and are willing to pay more for the near-luxury feel. The review highlights its two-tone interior, leatherette, and soft-touch materials, which make it the more premium-feeling option.

Toyota Safety Sense P is the named safety suite, and it brings pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
