Summary
With 95 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,165, 26.3% of 2016 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a comfortable, practical midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and everyday usefulness. It offers a smooth ride, upscale styling, and a versatile cabin, which helps explain why it appeals to families who want something easy to live with rather than especially sporty. Owners also tend to praise its comfort, feature content, and the available V6’s strong performance.
For this generation, the Highlander comes with gas and hybrid powertrains, and front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive optional. The gas version used a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor for 243 system horsepower. It also brings useful everyday equipment such as an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Toyota Safety Sense, along with up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down. Those strengths make it a well-rounded choice, though it is still not especially exciting to drive, and its steering is described as numb and uncommunicative.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

| Change vs. Last Year | −4.05% |

Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and abundance of features, and they also highlight the smooth ride and strong V6 performance. That lines up well with its role as a practical midsize SUV for families who want something easy to live with rather than especially sporty. With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly emphasizes reliability, and the comments also point to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience with comfort and strong everyday usability. That combination makes it appealing if you want a used SUV you can count on for long-term family duty. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding a well-kept example with clean history and consistent maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was minor or repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for signs of uneven wear, poor repairs, or neglected maintenance. Focus on overall condition, because the best used Highlanders are the ones that have been cared for consistently rather than simply priced attractively.

What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $17,991 sits slightly below last year's $18,751.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The Highlander’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a comfortable and dependable family SUV. If you maintain it well and keep mileage and condition in check, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,021, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $17,991 average.
- It adds refreshed styling and standard safety tech.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2016 if you want the better value and are willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer refresh with more standard safety equipment, the 2017 is the stronger upgrade path.
