What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use or towing. Pay close attention to body condition, underbody wear, suspension components, and signs of hard use that may not show up in photos. Because this model is valued for capability, you want to make sure the example you choose still feels tight, complete, and properly maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail Premium example adds useful off-road hardware and convenience touches, including stock skid plates and the kinetic dynamic suspension system, while the base setup is more stripped toward purpose than comfort.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 delivers 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, with a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
• Safety package: The 4Runner includes stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, plus side knee and full-length curtain airbags.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system adds cell-phone navigation, and the backup camera is a useful aid; the screen is described as small.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 17 mpg city/21 highway, for a combined rating of 18.

Which 2016 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 1 trim level: Trail Premium.

Here's the short version:

The Trail Premium is the one to target if you want the 4Runner’s core mission with the most useful off-road hardware and a few extra conveniences. It adds the kind of equipment that matches this SUV’s personality, including the kinetic dynamic suspension system, crawl-speed control, a locking rear differential, and variable terrain modes. That makes it the best fit if you care most about rough-terrain ability and want the trim that most clearly leans into the 4Runner’s strengths.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,208 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.86% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $23,370, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $23,940 sits slightly below last year's $24,644.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now than you could a year ago. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should expect some pressure on short-term appreciation, even though the model’s reputation still supports demand. The 4Runner’s strong utility and loyal following help cushion that drop, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.94/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety equipment includes stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, plus side knee and full-length curtain airbags. The main caveat is the rollover result, which trails the rest of its crash performance and is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.86% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.94/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds cell-phone navigation and a higher towing capacity while staying true to its off-road mission.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,790, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,940 average.
• It is a rugged SUV built for serious off-road ability and strong utility.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front and you can live with an older example, the 2015 is the value-oriented alternative.
