Why it stands out
The 2016 Tesla Model S stands out as one of the most distinctive used luxury EVs because it helped define what a modern electric sedan could be. By this point, Tesla had already given the Model S a major refresh, replacing the black grille with a body-colored nose and redesigning the headlights with full-LED adaptive beams. It also sat in a period when Tesla was constantly updating the car, so the 2016 model year could be found with a wide mix of battery packs and equipment. That makes it especially important for shoppers to look closely at individual listings, but it also means the car can offer a lot of variety.
What made the Model S so compelling in 2016 was its blend of technology, range, and performance. Standard equipment included 12-way power-adjustable seats, heated front seats, navigation, a high-definition rear-view camera, leatherette seating surfaces, and two USB ports, while available features included a panoramic glass roof, Nappa leather seats, premium audio, Autopilot, a power rear liftgate, active air suspension, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and heated washer nozzles. The car also offered fast charging through Tesla’s Supercharger network, and the available Autopilot hardware and software helped reinforce its reputation as a tech-forward sedan. Owners often praise the Model S for its impressive technology, performance, and value, along with its smooth driving experience and attractive interior.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind, though. The Model S did not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and build quality was a common criticism. Some owners also mention practical annoyances such as low ground clearance and the lack of rear-seat cup holders. Even so, the 2016 Tesla Model S remains appealing because it combines futuristic design, strong performance, and a level of innovation that still feels relevant today.

This was a great value. I had never driven a Tesla before and this experience was beyond rewarding. So easy to learn and such a comfortable, low maintenance yet sexy and sophisticated ride. Loved the extra space for shopping, and extreme comfort for passengers. Would rent over and over again above any other cars. Price was just as equally efficient compared to lower brands. I highly recommend.

Generally — the 2016 Tesla Model S earns a 4.4/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its amazing technology, performance, and value, and they also highlight the beautiful interior and smooth driving experience. For you, that means this model year makes the most sense if you want a distinctive used luxury EV with a tech-forward feel and strong everyday appeal. With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also leans toward reliable, trouble-free ownership in the sense that people value the car’s long-term appeal, especially its technology and performance. That said, you should still expect used-EV ownership to depend heavily on how well the specific car has been maintained and how carefully it has been used over time. For you, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean history and consistent care.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with the history report so you can confirm accident status, title status, and ownership patterns before you get too far into the process. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on overall condition, since used examples can vary a lot in equipment and wear. Pay close attention to the car’s physical condition and how well the features you care about are working, because individual listings can differ meaningfully.

What is the 2016 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $19,103 sits slightly above last year's $19,016.
That kind of stability suggests the market has been fairly consistent, which can help support resale confidence if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-kept example and avoid overpaying, you should be in a decent position when it comes time to sell. Strong demand tends to follow cars that still feel relevant and desirable to used shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a strong choice if you want a used Model S with broad availability, stable pricing, and strong owner approval. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby older year may be worth a look, but you should expect to trade some of the 2016’s balance of features and market stability for a lower entry price.
