Summary
With 400 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,306, 32.3% of 2016 Tesla Model S listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Tesla Model S 4.36 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Tesla Model S stands out as one of the most distinctive used luxury EVs because it helped define what a modern electric sedan could be. By this point, Tesla had already given the Model S a major refresh, replacing the black grille with a body-colored nose and redesigning the headlights with full-LED adaptive beams. It also sat in a period when Tesla was constantly updating the car, so the 2016 model year could be found with a wide mix of battery packs and equipment. That makes it especially important for shoppers to look closely at individual listings, but it also means the car can offer a lot of variety.
What made the Model S so compelling in 2016 was its blend of technology, range, and performance. Standard equipment included 12-way power-adjustable seats, heated front seats, navigation, a high-definition rear-view camera, leatherette seating surfaces, and two USB ports, while available features included a panoramic glass roof, Nappa leather seats, premium audio, Autopilot, a power rear liftgate, active air suspension, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and heated washer nozzles. The car also offered fast charging through Tesla’s Supercharger network, and the available Autopilot hardware and software helped reinforce its reputation as a tech-forward sedan. Owners often praise the Model S for its impressive technology, performance, and value, along with its smooth driving experience and attractive interior.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind, though. The Model S did not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and build quality was a common criticism. Some owners also mention practical annoyances such as low ground clearance and the lack of rear-seat cup holders. Even so, the 2016 Tesla Model S remains appealing because it combines futuristic design, strong performance, and a level of innovation that still feels relevant today.

This was a great value. I had never driven a Tesla before and this experience was beyond rewarding. So easy to learn and such a comfortable, low maintenance yet sexy and sophisticated ride. Loved the extra space for shopping, and extreme comfort for passengers. Would rent over and over again above any other cars. Price was just as equally efficient compared to lower brands. I highly recommend.

Is the 2016 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that many people find dependable enough to keep enjoying over time, especially when it comes to the driving experience and overall ownership satisfaction. At the same time, the same reviews suggest you should pay close attention to individual vehicle condition, since used examples can vary a lot. For a used buyer, that means long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-documented car with a clean history and strong maintenance records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Tesla Model S?
At 72.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on every candidate and prioritize listings with clear ownership and repair records. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, panel fit, interior wear, and any signs of past damage or poor repairs. Because this model year can vary widely from one listing to the next, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 391 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.50% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 72.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,707, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $19,289 sits slightly above last year's $19,004.
That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well. If you choose a clean, well-kept example, you may be better positioned to hold value than if you buy a car with accident history or visible wear. The relatively tight price band also suggests buyers are still willing to pay for the right listing.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.50% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2016 is a strong choice if you want a well-liked Model S with broad appeal, solid owner satisfaction, and enough inventory to compare options. If you’re price-sensitive, you may also want to look at nearby years, but the 2016 stands out as a balanced pick when you can find a clean example with a competitive price and good history.
