Is the 2016 Subaru WRX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a car that feels enjoyable, comfortable, and valuable over time, and it also reflects the kind of dependable ownership experience shoppers often want from a used performance sedan. The expert writeup reinforces that this is a car you can live with every day, not just a weekend toy.

Subaru’s cost-effectiveness notes also highlight strong residual value, which supports the case for long-term ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the car’s basic appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and driven responsibly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru WRX?

At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on overall condition, signs of abuse, and whether the drivetrain and interior still reflect careful ownership.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base WRX is the simplest version, while higher trims add a sunroof, leather seating, and other comfort upgrades that make the cabin feel more polished.
• Powertrain: The WRX uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat 4-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive, and you can choose a 6-speed manual or, in higher trims, a CVT automatic.
• Safety package: EyeSight is available only on CVT-equipped models and includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and cross-path alert control; all WRXs include a backup camera.
• Infotainment: You get a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a 4.5-inch multifunction display, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and steering-wheel-mounted controls, with available navigation and a premium 9-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual returns 21 mpg city/28 highway/24 combined, while the CVT returns 19/25/21.

Which 2016 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?

The 2016 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: WRX, WRX Premium, and WRX Limited.

Here's the short version:

• WRX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core WRX formula: turbocharged power, all-wheel drive, Bluetooth, steering-wheel controls, and the same basic performance character as the pricier trims.
• WRX Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of equipment and usability, since it adds comfort and convenience upgrades while also making the CVT automatic available.
• WRX Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale version, with leather seating and a power driver’s seat on top of the Premium’s equipment.

Higher trims add leather and a power driver’s seat, and EyeSight is only available on CVT-equipped models.

The current average of $14,464 sits slightly below last year's $15,363.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean a future seller has less room to count on appreciation. Even so, the WRX’s strong enthusiast appeal and broad usefulness can help support demand when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.85% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 model adds a new touchscreen infotainment system and a more modern cabin feel while keeping the WRX’s core turbocharged, all-wheel-drive character.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of value, performance, and everyday usability, the 2016 WRX is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, nearby model years can still make sense, but the 2016’s softer pricing and updated tech make it the cleaner buy for most shoppers.
