CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Nissan Rogue

Summary
With 3,133 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,378, 31.3% of 2016 Nissan Rogue listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Nissan Rogue 4.75 / 5 stars.
53.7% of 2016 Nissan Rogue listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Rogue stands out as a practical, value-focused compact crossover that leans more toward everyday comfort and ease of use than rugged capability. By this generation, Nissan had given the Rogue a tougher, more upright SUV look while keeping the size and drivetrain layout familiar, and it remained one of the few compact crossovers that could be had with seven seats as an option. It also offered a roomy, family-friendly cabin with reclining second-row seats and Nissan’s Divide-N-Hide cargo system, which helps owners organize or conceal items in the trunk.
For 2016, the Rogue’s appeal came from its straightforward formula: a 2.5-liter engine with 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, Nissan’s Xtronic CVT, and the choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Even the entry-level model included a rear-view camera, while higher trims added conveniences such as dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat adjustment, automatic headlights, Sirius satellite radio, NissanConnect, a power liftgate, and an around-view monitor. That mix of equipment helped make the Rogue feel well equipped for the money, and owners often praise its comfort, smooth ride, fuel efficiency, and generous interior space.
The main drawback is the transmission, which has a reputation for problems in this generation, including juddering, noise, and outright failure. That concern is worth keeping in mind when shopping used examples. Still, for buyers who want a stylish, spacious, and reasonably priced family crossover, the 2016 Nissan Rogue offers a lot of everyday usefulness without feeling complicated or overdone.

Nissan Rogue SV 2016 is a great car in its class. I had a comparison between a this and a Ford Escape 2017. The only reason to choose Nissan over Ford is the interior design in the base model of Nissan is way ahead. Ford comes with a tad more powerful engine, lower mpg and interiors that are way less in the base model. However, the only feature which I do not like so far is the engine start button on Nissan. Still trying to figure all the electronics and controls as my previous vehicle was way too manual.

Starting with 2014 models, the Rogue has impressive styling, elegant interior, a nice amount of cargo space, AWD available in all trim levels, and still very good gas mileage of 26 city / 33 highway. Great competitor for Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

Is the 2016 Nissan Rogue reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid a poorly maintained example, since condition matters more when shopping this generation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Rogue?
At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden damage or repair quality issues. Focus closely on overall condition, especially signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, or anything that suggests the vehicle has had a harder life than the listing implies.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Rogue?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.

- Inventory: There are 3,123 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.57% compared with last year.

What is the 2016 Nissan Rogue's resale value?
The current average of $10,361 sits slightly below last year's $10,745.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can limit upside if you plan to resell soon. On the other hand, the Rogue’s broad appeal and practical layout help keep it relevant with shoppers who want a comfortable, value-oriented crossover. If you buy carefully and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should be in a better position to preserve value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Rogue or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $9,482, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $10,361 average.
- It offers a more polished, mature design.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2015 is the more price-sensitive alternative and may be worth a closer look.
