CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Nissan Pathfinder
overall

Summary
With 797 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,553.00, 29.4% of 2016 Nissan Pathfinders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
54.6% of 2016 Pathfinder models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is a family-sized crossover SUV that aims to be practical first. Nissan’s own test-drive summary says it gets many things right, but also many things wrong, which leaves it functional rather than especially memorable. That makes it a straightforward choice for buyers who want a crossover that focuses on everyday usefulness instead of standing out with a more distinctive personality.
What helps the 2016 Pathfinder is the sense of space and comfort it offers. Owner feedback highlights a spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and strong cargo capacity, with the third row of seats adding to its family appeal. At the same time, some shoppers may find the lack of a digital speed readout and the absence of certain features such as a sunroof disappointing, and visibility concerns tied to the windshield design may also matter to some buyers.

Have had great luck with our previous pathfinder. Only concern is the windshield might have a bigger blind spot because of the curve of the windshield and this SV model doesn't have blind spot indicators on the mirror.

Great vehicle so far, no issues. I like the extra room over the Traverse and Acadia. It has more room in the cargo area than the Journey for sure, with the third row seat opened. I like the comfort and the driveability, it just seems smoother and more responsive. I like the power it has. So far a very nice vehicle. The steering wheel control layout makes sense and is easy to access. The navigation on the GM vehicles is a little easier to navigat through, but it may just take a little extra time to learn the Nissan layout. We were familiar with the GM system already. One small complaint, it does not have the digital speed readout. My wife got used to that on her Equinox. I liked it also, but the Pathfinder doesnt have it. Plenty of room to put it in there, but it doesnt have that feature.

I test drove the platinum edition that was fully loaded except for it was lacking a Sun roof which was a deal breaker unfortunately. I did enjoy the plush interior and ride quality. We compared this model to GMC Acadia, Dodge Durango, Acura MDX, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorers. We ended up going with the Acura MDX. Now that is refinement.

How much does the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,545 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,416.84 |
| Year-Round High | $10,632.03 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,636 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.26% |
Prices have softened 10.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 814 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $9,416.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and strong cargo space, especially with the third row in play. The overview also frames it as a practical family-sized crossover that prioritizes everyday usefulness, which fits the feedback about comfort and roominess.
At the same time, the expert summary makes clear that this is a functional rather than especially memorable SUV. With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable-feeling package with a spacious cabin, smooth driving experience, and comfort that many drivers seem happy to live with over time. The expert performance notes also describe the 3.5-liter V6 as dependable and powerful, which supports the sense that the core drivetrain is built for steady use.
The cost-effectiveness commentary adds a cautionary note by pointing to a very low reliability prediction from Consumer Reports, so you should not assume every used example has been equally well cared for. For used buyers, that makes maintenance records and a careful pre-purchase inspection especially important if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, repair quality, and any signs of prior damage that could affect long-term ownership. It also makes sense to pay close attention to visibility, cabin features, and overall wear, since owner feedback points to concerns that may matter in daily use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The basic S trim level is the entry point, while SV, SL, and Platinum move you up the range. The cabin is described as nondescript on the outside but more upscale inside, and the SL adds Tech and Premium sub-trim designations.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD is optional with automatic and lock modes.
- Safety package: The Pathfinder includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. It does not offer drowsy-driver detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, or automatic emergency braking.
- Infotainment: The system does not offer natural voice recognition, smartphone projection, NissanConnect with Mobile Apps, text messaging support, Wi-Fi, or automatic collision notification.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive notes 20.2 mpg on a test loop, just short of the EPA’s estimate of 21 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2016 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Pathfinder’s core family-hauling space and V6 power at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you want the basics and plan to keep the budget tight.
- SV: This is the logical step up if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping all the way to the top. It should suit you if you want a more comfortable daily driver without chasing luxury extras.
- SL: This is the best-value trim if you want a more upscale feel, because the cabin is described as leather-lined and it adds Tech and Premium sub-trim designations. Choose this one if you want the Pathfinder to feel more refined without going straight to the top trim.
- Platinum: This is the most fully equipped version, and it is the one to choose if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them. It is the trim for you if you want the most premium Pathfinder experience available here.
The SL is the trim where Nissan adds the Tech and Premium sub-trim designations, so that’s the key safety-and-comfort step up to watch for.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 814 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.26% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,416.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $9,545 sits slightly below last year's $10,636.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because the Pathfinder is still drawing buyer interest at a lower price point, a clean, well-kept example should be easier to move than one with accident history or visible wear. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder safe?
The Pathfinder loses its Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety this year, and it earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from the federal government.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Pathfinder includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. It does not offer drowsy-driver detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, or automatic emergency braking.
That missing active-safety hardware is the main caveat here, especially if you want a used SUV with more modern driver-assistance coverage. The crash-test performance is solid, but the equipment list is dated by current standards.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 Pathfinder is practical first, with a spacious interior and strong cargo capacity.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,946, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,545 average.
- It adds a broader family-hauling appeal with more interior space.
The bottom line: If you want the lower purchase price and are comfortable shopping carefully, the 2016 is the better value path. If you can spend more and want the next model year’s broader family-focused appeal, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade.
