CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Nissan Pathfinder
overall

Summary
With 808 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,515, 30.6% of 2016 Nissan Pathfinders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is a family-sized crossover SUV that aims to be practical and easy to live with. Nissan gets many things right with it, but the overall impression is mixed, leaving it functional rather than especially memorable. That balance may appeal to shoppers who want a straightforward three-row SUV without a lot of drama.
Owners commonly praise the Pathfinder’s spacious interior and smooth driving experience, along with its comfort, power, and cargo space, especially when using the third row of seats. At the same time, some drivers miss a digital speed readout and certain features such as a sunroof, and visibility can be an issue because of the windshield design.

Have had great luck with our previous pathfinder. Only concern is the windshield might have a bigger blind spot because of the curve of the windshield and this SV model doesn't have blind spot indicators on the mirror.

Great vehicle so far, no issues. I like the extra room over the Traverse and Acadia. It has more room in the cargo area than the Journey for sure, with the third row seat opened. I like the comfort and the driveability, it just seems smoother and more responsive. I like the power it has. So far a very nice vehicle. The steering wheel control layout makes sense and is easy to access. The navigation on the GM vehicles is a little easier to navigat through, but it may just take a little extra time to learn the Nissan layout. We were familiar with the GM system already. One small complaint, it does not have the digital speed readout. My wife got used to that on her Equinox. I liked it also, but the Pathfinder doesnt have it. Plenty of room to put it in there, but it doesnt have that feature.

I test drove the platinum edition that was fully loaded except for it was lacking a Sun roof which was a deal breaker unfortunately. I did enjoy the plush interior and ride quality. We compared this model to GMC Acadia, Dodge Durango, Acura MDX, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorers. We ended up going with the Acura MDX. Now that is refinement.

How much does the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,540 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,422 |
| Year-Round High | $10,557 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,559 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.65% |
Prices have softened 9.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 803 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, smooth driving experience, comfort, power, and cargo space, especially when you use the third row. That lines up with the Pathfinder’s role as a family-sized crossover SUV that is meant to be practical and easy to live with.
The overall takeaway is that you should view it as a straightforward three-row SUV for everyday family duty rather than something especially memorable. 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with repeated praise for its comfort, power, and spaciousness. The expert evaluation also describes the V6 as dependable and powerful, which supports the idea that the Pathfinder can be a solid long-term family hauler when maintained properly.
You should still pay close attention to service history and overall condition, because used ownership risk depends heavily on how well the vehicle was cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get serious about any listing, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for prior collision repairs, uneven panel gaps, and signs of poor bodywork. Focus on overall condition, because the Pathfinder’s value proposition depends heavily on whether it has been kept clean, maintained, and free of hidden damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S trim level is the basic version, while the SV, SL, and Platinum add equipment and refinement. The SL is further distinguished by Tech and Premium sub-trim designations, and the base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more features.
- Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard, 4WD is optional, and the setup is described as dependable and powerful.
- Safety package: The Pathfinder includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. It does not offer drowsy-driver detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, or automatic emergency braking.
- Infotainment: The system does not offer smartphone projection, natural voice recognition, NissanConnect with Mobile Apps, Wi-Fi internet access, or connected emergency services. The Family Entertainment Package adds dual viewing screens, wireless headphones, a remote, a 3-prong electrical outlet, and video-game hookups.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 20.2 mpg, just short of the EPA’s estimate of 21 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2016 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Pathfinder’s core three-row utility at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the most affordable way into the model, but it is also the trim most likely to feel stripped down compared with the others.
- SV: This is the first step up if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping all the way to the upper trims. It should be the trim to compare first if you want more comfort and convenience without chasing luxury pricing.
- SL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more upscale content and is further differentiated with Tech and Premium sub-trim designations. If you want the Pathfinder to feel more complete without going all the way to the top, this is the one to focus on.
- Platinum: This is the most fully equipped version and is the right pick if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them. It is the trim for shoppers who want the most premium Pathfinder experience available in this model year.
The safety content notes that the Pathfinder cannot be equipped with forward-collision warning or automatic emergency braking, which is an important gap to keep in mind across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 803 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,422, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $9,540 sits slightly below last year's $10,559.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Pathfinder easier to buy now but less favorable if you are thinking about near-term resale. If you purchase at today’s softer pricing and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned than a buyer who paid more when prices were higher.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder safe?
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA and loses its Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS this year.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Pathfinder includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. Those features help with visibility and low-speed maneuvering, but the safety story is weakened by the lack of forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, drowsy-driver detection, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
That means you get a decent set of awareness aids, but you should not expect the kind of advanced driver-assistance coverage that many used shoppers now look for.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 combines a spacious cabin with a smooth ride and a dependable V6.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,799, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,540 average.
- It adds a broader family-hauler focus with available all-wheel-drive capability.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced option and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition, the 2016 is the better value play. If you can spend more and want the next year’s broader appeal, the 2017 is the cleaner alternative.
