Used 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander for Sale near New Jersey

How much does the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander cost?

Prices have softened 10.17% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 179 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare.

Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander a good car?

Yes — 4.75/5 from users, and the expert rating is 5.5/10. The model scores 7/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The 2016 Outlander benefits from more than 100 changes for the model year, and those updates made it more competitive than before. It still comes across as a quiet, unassuming crossover rather than a standout choice, but the improvements give you a more appealing option if you value progress over flash.

29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2016 Outlander is described as having a sketchy reliability history, and that makes careful shopping especially important for you. The model’s generous warranty helps, but the long-term ownership picture still depends heavily on how well each used example has been maintained.

The performance notes also point to a powertrain that is adequate rather than troublesome, with the revised CVT helping make the 4-cylinder’s modest output usable in everyday driving. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright failure and more about whether a given vehicle has been cared for consistently over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander?

At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and safety systems work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes ES, SE, SEL, and GT, and the SEL test vehicle shows how much equipment can change as you move up the range. The base setup is more basic, while the SEL adds a more upscale cabin presentation and can be paired with a package that brings navigation, a premium sound system, a power sunroof, a power rear liftgate, and added safety equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder makes 166 horsepower and is paired with a CVT that helps the engine feel more usable in daily driving. The GT is the only version with a V6, and that engine is the one you need if you want to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
• Safety package: The lane-departure warning system is bundled with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking, and that quartet is optional only on the SEL and GT. You should confirm whether a used example has that package, since it is not standard across the lineup.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth with music streaming, and a wide-angle reversing camera. A larger 7-inch screen appears on the test vehicle with navigation, a USB port, an SD card reader, and real-time traffic, weather, and gas-price information.
• Fuel efficiency: The test loop returned 23.7 mpg in combined driving, which was below the city rating of 24 mpg and underscores that real-world efficiency may not be especially impressive.

Which 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is offered in 4 trim levels: ES, SE, SEL, GT.

Here's the short version:

• ES: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outlander lineup and are comfortable with the most basic equipment set.
• SE: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and value, since it sits above the base model without pushing you into the highest-priced versions.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim if you want the most appealing mix of comfort and available equipment, especially because the test vehicle’s SEL setup shows how much the cabin and feature content improve here.
• GT: Choose this one if you want the V6 engine and the extra capability that comes with it, especially if towing matters to you.

The safety package with lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking is optional only on the SEL and GT.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 179 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,990, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander's resale value?

The current average of $8,990 sits slightly below last year's $10,007.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can be a mixed signal for future sellers. On one hand, lower entry prices can help you buy in more affordably now; on the other, they also point to softer retained value than a year ago.

For you as a buyer, that means depreciation has been working in your favor. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale pricing to remain sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment level.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander safe?

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA when equipped with S-AWC, and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA when equipped with FWD.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking, but that suite is optional only on the SEL and GT. You should also note that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are called out as missing features in the review, which matters if you want a more complete driver-assistance setup.

Should I buy a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mitsubishi made more than 100 changes for this model year, and the updates clearly improved the Outlander.

The bottom line: If you want the more improved version of this crossover and you’re shopping with value in mind, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is simply finding the lowest possible price, you can still shop this year carefully and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example you can find.
