CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 977 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,537, 31.0% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 3.92 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a luxury sedan that was built to showcase Mercedes-Benz’s best technology and craftsmanship. In the W222 generation, it brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, along with a cabin that made generous use of wood and metal accents. It also featured selectable ambient lighting, which became a defining Mercedes interior touch, and a pair of 12.3-inch screens under a single panel that still looked contemporary years later. Many of its best features were optional, but most versions were still well equipped, with available luxury touches such as rear executive seating packages, massaging seats, active parking assist, and Burmester surround-sound audio.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is how thoroughly it blends comfort, technology, and performance. The W222 introduced “magic body control,” which used road scanning to help the suspension react to imperfections in advance, and it also came with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Buyers could choose from strong V8-powered versions, and the lineup also included the S 550e plug-in hybrid, which offered 14 miles of electric range. At the same time, the car was not without drawbacks: it is expensive to maintain, and the source notes that electrical issues remain a common concern, so ownership can be costly even when the car itself feels exceptionally polished.

I think this car is trash. They have not been taking good care of it. Missing all the passengers windows buttons. The driver seat seat is broken and the car is filthy inside.

The car had several cosmetic and mechanical issues. There were numerous dents and scratches all over it. It’s definitely been in more than one accident Nomatter what they say in the listing. Then to top it off the reverse camera doesn’t work. Horrible listing!! Beware

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $29,355 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,871 |
| Year-Round High | $32,957 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,674 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.16% |
Prices have softened 10.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 986 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong choice if you want a luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, technology, and performance, though it comes with ownership costs you should weigh carefully. Its user rating is 3.92/5, and drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, great handling, value for money, and superior performance compared with competitors. The overview also points to a cabin built around craftsmanship and high-end features, which makes it especially appealing if you want a flagship sedan for comfort-focused daily driving or long-distance cruising. With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is presented as a polished luxury sedan with advanced engineering, but it also carries the kind of ownership complexity that can make long-term upkeep expensive. Drivers specifically mention maintenance costs and electronic components as pain points over time, even while praising the car’s luxury and performance. That means you should expect a used example to reward careful ownership, but you should also budget for higher repair risk if you plan to keep it for the long haul.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on electronics, since the model’s ownership costs can rise quickly when systems start to fail. You should also pay close attention to overall condition, because a luxury sedan like this can look excellent on the surface while still hiding expensive deferred maintenance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings if you know what to prioritize.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 986 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,871, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $29,355 sits slightly below last year's $32,674.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have less downside than someone who purchased when prices were higher. For resale, condition and documented maintenance will matter a lot because shoppers in this segment tend to be selective.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.16% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a good path if you want a well-equipped luxury flagship at a softer price point than newer examples, especially if you can verify condition and maintenance history. If you are more price-sensitive, you may want to keep shopping nearby years and compare the best-documented cars rather than focusing on model year alone.
