Summary
With 693 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,076, 30.4% of 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as the start of the W222 generation, and Mercedes clearly used it to push the model’s reputation for luxury, engineering, and technology even further. This redesign brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and Mercedes said it was the first car in the world to exclusively feature LEDs over traditional bulbs, with 500 light units throughout the interior and exterior. It also introduced “magic body control,” which used road scanning to detect potholes and imperfections in advance and adapt the suspension to them, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
Inside, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class leaned hard into the brand’s reputation for opulence. Its cabin used wood and metal accents, selectable ambient lighting, and a pair of giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while still retaining many physical controls. The initial U.S. models were the S 550 and AMG S 63, with the S 550 using a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 making 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and the AMG S 63 using a hand-built 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 making 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet. That combination of serious performance, advanced tech, and a richly finished interior makes this S-Class especially appealing to buyers who want a flagship luxury sedan that feels both cutting-edge and deeply substantial.
There are a few caveats, though. Many of the best features were optional, so not every car will be equally well equipped, and the model was expensive when new and remains costly to maintain. Even so, the W222 has a very good reliability record overall, and owner feedback in the data praises its elegance, comfort, workmanship, and performance.

I finally broke down and got a Mercedes and I really like the car. If you go over it closely you will see the detail put into the construction that sets this car apart from the competition. There are many fine cars on the road today but given the depth of the selection from Mercedes it is hard to imagine not being able to fine exactly what you are hoping to find. Once you have one you will understand why owners of Mercedes like them so much and continue to buy them year after year.

Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — 5/5. The overview also points to a richly finished cabin, advanced technology, and serious power, which fits buyers looking for a premium full-size luxury sedan. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights reliability alongside comfort, workmanship, and elegance, which is encouraging if you want a luxury sedan that owners feel good about living with. The overall picture suggests this model can be a dependable long-term choice when it has been maintained properly.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the rating and more about the cost and complexity that can come with a high-end flagship car over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with advanced electronics, suspension technology, or other high-cost systems. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and how well the car’s luxury features and mechanical systems are working together.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 694 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,954, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $20,954 sits slightly below last year's $22,848.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re thinking about future value, condition and maintenance history matter even more because buyers in this segment tend to be selective. A well-kept example should hold appeal better than one with gaps in service or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2014 is a strong choice if you want the W222 S-Class experience at a lower entry price and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2014 remains attractive for buyers who value luxury, technology, and owner satisfaction.
