Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that puts technology, craftsmanship, and comfort at the center of the experience. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the cabin was designed to feel especially refined, with wood and metal accents flowing together more smoothly than before. It also brought selectable ambient lighting, which helped define the interior atmosphere, and the car’s feature set was broad enough that many versions were richly equipped even if some of the best items were optional.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is how much advanced equipment it packed into a traditional luxury sedan shape. The W222 generation featured two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. It also offered magic body control, which used road scanning to adapt the suspension, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Buyers also got the sense that this was a car built to showcase Mercedes technology, from night vision to available rear executive seating, massaging seats, and premium audio.
There are tradeoffs, though. The S-Class is expensive to own, and the source notes that upkeep can be steep even though this generation has a very good reliability record overall. It also points out that suspension and electrical issues are common concerns, which is worth keeping in mind for a used example. Even so, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains distinctive because it combines flagship-level luxury with a long list of advanced features and a reputation for being one of the most sophisticated sedans of its era.

How much does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,409 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,409 |
| Year-Round High | $31,984 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,005 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.24% |
Prices have softened 11.24% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 951 listings available, which suggests you should have a solid range of options to compare.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
With a 3.9/5 user rating, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class looks like a strong fit if you want a luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, advanced amenities, and polished driving manners. Drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, great handling, and value for money, and many also point to its superior performance compared with competitors. That lines up well with its role as a full-size luxury sedan built around technology, craftsmanship, and comfort. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is presented as a sophisticated luxury sedan with a very good reliability record overall, even though upkeep can be steep. Drivers also describe it as dependable and appreciate its long-term appeal, while noting that maintenance costs and electronic components can become challenging over time. For used buyers, that means the car can make sense if you’re prepared for premium ownership costs, but long-term risk is still tied to how well the previous owner maintained it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on suspension, electrical systems, and other high-cost wear items, since those are the kinds of issues that can turn a luxury bargain into an expensive project. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, not just mileage or trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile examples.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 951 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,409, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $28,409 sits slightly below last year's $32,005.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy with less risk of immediate overpayment. If you plan to resell later, the softer pricing also means your future value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. A well-kept example should hold up better than one with unresolved mechanical or cosmetic issues.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a sensible choice if you want the S-Class experience at a lower used-car price and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2016 already gives you a strong mix of luxury, features, and softened pricing.
