What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda CX-9?

At 67% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any evidence that the cabin electronics or safety systems have been neglected. Because this is a three-row SUV, you should also pay close attention to interior condition and how well the third row has held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a body-color roof spoiler, dual exhaust, 3-zone automatic climate control, auxiliary audio jack, dual USB ports, Bluetooth hands-free calling with streaming audio capability, and Mazda Connect infotainment. The Touring adds heated side mirrors, a power rear liftgate, leather seating with heated front seats, push-button start, a larger 8-inch touch screen display for Mazda Connect, second-row armrests with integrated USB charging ports, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds 20-inch wheels, adaptive high beams, rain-sensing wipers, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo, a head-up display, and a suite of high-tech safety gear. The Signature adds unique LED lighting accent built into the chrome grille, unique steering wheel stitching, Nappa leather, and exclusive Rosewood interior trim.
• Powertrain: The CX-9 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 with 227 hp on 87-octane fuel and 250 hp on 93-octane, plus 310 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through a 6-speed automatic to the front wheels or available all-wheel drive, and all models include Sport mode and manual tap-shift functionality.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer anti-theft system, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver assistance includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect is standard, with a 7-inch touch screen on the base model and an 8-inch touch screen on other trims. Bluetooth hands-free calling and streaming audio are standard, along with auxiliary input and two USB ports. The system uses a rotary dial when driving, and the text does not indicate wireless smartphone integration or over-the-air updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model returns 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined. The all-wheel-drive model returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined.

Which 2016 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the CX-9’s core upscale feel at the lowest entry point. You still get Mazda Connect, Bluetooth streaming, dual USB ports, 3-zone climate control, and the basic exterior and cabin equipment that make the CX-9 feel more premium than many rivals.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the biggest everyday upgrades: heated front seats, leather seating, a power rear liftgate, a larger 8-inch screen, push-button start, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the CX-9 to feel fully loaded, with navigation, a Bose premium stereo, head-up display, adaptive high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and more advanced safety equipment.
• Signature: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with Nappa leather, Rosewood interior trim, unique stitching, and distinctive exterior detailing for buyers who want the most upscale cabin presentation.

The safety package expands as you move up the range, with more advanced driver-assistance features available on higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda CX-9?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, but the best listings can still move quickly.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 276 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.00% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,999, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Mazda CX-9's resale value?

The current average of $12,999 sits slightly below last year's $14,284.

That decline suggests the CX-9 has become more affordable for buyers, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, since the market has already adjusted downward. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still be easier to move than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Mazda CX-9 safe?

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, LATCH child seat anchoring, a backup camera, an engine immobilizer anti-theft system, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, backup sensors, and forward collision avoidance.

A key caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is not standard on every trim, so you should verify the exact equipment on the vehicle you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 CX-9 is positioned as a more-for-less, near-luxury three-row SUV with a quieter cabin and a more upscale feel.

The bottom line: If you want the CX-9’s strongest value proposition, the 2016 model is appealing because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a premium-feeling cabin. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on well-kept Touring or Sport examples; if you want the most upscale experience, the Grand Touring and Signature trims are the ones to compare most closely.
