Is the 2016 Lexus RX a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Lexus RX earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Technology, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, smooth ride, and loaded interior, and they also call out its reliability and luxury features. The RX’s comfort-first mission fits shoppers who want a refined, practical luxury crossover rather than something sporty. Trade-offs include sluggish performance and a design that may not appeal to everyone.

With 39.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful value in the market if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Lexus RX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as reliable and dependable, and they also highlight its trouble-free feel and comfort over the long term. The RX’s powertrain and quiet, easygoing character reinforce that impression, and Lexus also emphasizes reliability in its ownership messaging. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some listings may have transmission concerns or other wear-related issues, so a careful inspection matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Lexus RX?

At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings with similar prices. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and how the transmission behaves on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The RX 350 F Sport adds larger 20-inch wheels and a firmer adaptive suspension, while the standard RX 350 focuses more on comfort and a smoother ride. The base setup is the better fit if you want the most relaxed daily driving experience.
• Powertrain: A 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower comes standard, paired with an 8-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is optional, and the hybrid RX 450h uses the same basic V6 with electric motors for a total of 308 horsepower.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System + includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, and rear-side airbags are standard.
• Infotainment: The RX uses a navigation system with voice input, live traffic and weather, Bluetooth streaming, and two USB ports. A 15-speaker Mark Levinson stereo is available, and telematics includes stolen-vehicle alerts, remote unlocking, and vehicle health reports.
• Fuel efficiency: The RX 350 AWD is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, and it averaged about 22 mpg in testing.

Which 2016 Lexus RX trim should I buy?

The 2016 Lexus RX is offered in 2 trim levels: RX 350 and RX 450h.

Here's the short version:

• RX 350: This is the core choice if you want the RX’s comfort, quiet ride, and strong value without paying for the hybrid system. It’s the best-value pick for most shoppers because it delivers the model’s main strengths at the lowest entry point.
• RX 450h: Choose this if you want the hybrid powertrain and its efficiency-focused setup. It suits buyers who want the RX’s luxury feel with a more fuel-conscious ownership experience.

Lexus Safety System + is the key safety package to look for, and it adds meaningful driver-assistance features.

• Deal availability: 39.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,561 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.22% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,781, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Lexus RX's resale value?

The current average of $22,004 sits slightly below last year's $22,275.

That modest decline suggests the RX has held value reasonably well, even as prices eased. For a future seller, that kind of stability can help reduce the risk of a steep drop if you own the vehicle for a few years. The RX’s broad appeal and comfort-first reputation should continue to support demand among used luxury SUV shoppers.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Lexus RX safe?

The 2016 Lexus RX earns a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Lexus Safety System + includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, and rear-side airbags are standard. The RX’s strong crash-test performance and standard safety equipment are major strengths, though the lane-keeping system can struggle at higher speeds.

Should I buy a 2016 Lexus RX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 39.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 RX delivers a redesigned cabin, strong safety, and a comfort-first driving experience.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $17,052, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $22,004 average.
• It’s a quiet, comfortable, practical used luxury crossover with strong value.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $23,441, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $22,004 average.
• It adds standard Safety System + and more convenience features.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of comfort, safety, and current-market value, the 2016 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the cheaper route to the RX formula, while the 2017 is worth considering if you want the added standard equipment.

How does the 2016 Lexus RX compare to the 2016 Acura RDX?

Our experts score the 2016 Lexus RX 7.8/10 and the 2016 Acura RDX 7.2/10. The RX is the more polished luxury SUV, with stronger expert scores, a richer interior feel, and better deal availability. The RDX undercuts it on average used price and offers slightly better highway fuel economy, but the RX brings the stronger safety story and broader appeal for comfort-focused shoppers.
