At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks promising. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the interior and cargo area match the seller’s description. Because the Soul’s appeal is tied to practicality and everyday usability, you’ll want to make sure the specific car you choose still feels clean, complete, and well cared for.

That price movement suggests the model has softened, which can make resale a little more challenging if you buy at the wrong point in the range. If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, you can improve your odds of holding value better than a neglected example.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,813, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,328 average.
• It offers strong value with personality and useful upgrades.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $8,820, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,328 average.
• It adds updated looks and an optional turbocharged engine.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the best all-around pick if you want a balanced mix of price, owner satisfaction, and everyday usefulness. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the smarter value play; if you want newer styling and are willing to pay more, the 2017 is the better alternative.
