CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Jeep Wrangler
overall

Summary
With 303 currently listed for sale near Sacramento, CA and an average price of $18,651.00, 15.8% of 2016 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Jeep Wrangler 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
76.6% of 2016 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends traits that are hard to find together in one vehicle. It has a convertible top for summer use and 4-wheel drive for winter and off-road driving year round. It also carries some of the most unique styling and consistently rugged standard equipment available in any new car today, which helps explain why it remains such an icon.
That appeal comes with clear tradeoffs. The Wrangler has poor road manners, and owners commonly describe it as noisy and bumpy on pavement. Even so, its simplicity, lower repair costs, fun driving experience, comfortable interior, and impressive power, especially with the manual transmission, give it a distinctive personality that many buyers still find worth the compromises.

The car states it has several benefits such as heated seats, rear camera, led lights, and a wench, however, none of these things work on the vehicle. This could be because if after market add ons, but as of no hardly anything works correctly. We will have to put a lot of money into it to get it working, therefore the price was not a good value.

Prices have softened 8.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,645 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $17,727.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.6/5 user rating, and our experts give it 6.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, comfortable interior, and impressive power, especially with the manual transmission. They also value its simplicity and lower repair costs, and the Wrangler’s convertible top and 4-wheel drive make it especially appealing if you want year-round versatility. With its rugged standard equipment and distinctive styling, it fits buyers who want capability and character more than polish.
The market also shows healthy interest, with 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback points to a vehicle that many owners find simple, dependable, and worth counting on, especially because they appreciate its lower repair costs and straightforward character.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that you can buy it knowing what you’ll get, which reinforces its reputation for predictable ownership. The tradeoff is that its age and low-tech design mean you should pay close attention to condition, maintenance history, and how hard it has been used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection, especially if the Wrangler has been modified or used off road. Focus on body condition, signs of wear from trail use, and whether the truck’s rugged equipment still functions as intended. Because this model is known for its simple, purpose-built setup, condition matters more than flashy features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport is the most basic version, with manual windows and door locks, cloth seats, and steel wheels. The Sport S adds power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The Sahara adds brighter interior touches, automatic headlights, and more upscale wheels, while the Rubicon is the most trail-focused with off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. You can get a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic, and fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city/21 highway/18 combined with the manual and 16 mpg city/20 highway/18 combined with the automatic.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It does not offer lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, or even a backup camera.
- Infotainment: The base setup is the Radio 130 with a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary input. A 6.5-inch touchscreen adds GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and front-facing aux and USB inputs, but the system is dated and lacks the larger modern screen many shoppers expect.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wrangler’s fuel economy is 16 mpg city/21 highway/18 combined with the manual, and 16 mpg city/20 highway/18 combined with the automatic. Those numbers are a common drawback if you plan to drive it daily.
Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Sport is the most stripped-down choice, with manual windows and locks, cloth seats, and steel wheels. If you want the Wrangler experience at the lowest entry point, this is the one that keeps things simplest.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Sport S is the best value for many shoppers because it adds power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror without moving too far upmarket.
- Premium/top trim: The Sahara is the most comfort-oriented trim, with brighter interior accents, automatic headlights, and more polished wheels. It is the better pick if you want a more refined feel without going full trail-specialist.
- Off-road trim: The Rubicon is the most capable off-road choice, with BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar. It makes the most sense if trail use matters more than everyday comfort.
The safety setup is consistent across the lineup, but the Wrangler still lacks several modern driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find meaningful value.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,645 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,727.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $17,731 sits slightly below last year's $19,332.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Wranglers with clean histories and strong presentation should hold buyer interest better than rough examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It also offers trailer sway control, which can help when towing or dealing with crosswinds.
The downside is that it lacks several modern safety technologies, including lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera. That means you should be especially careful if you plan to use it as a daily driver or want the latest driver-assistance features.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 keeps the Wrangler’s convertible-top, 4-wheel-drive formula while pairing it with strong off-road performance and rugged standard equipment.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $16,674, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,731 average.
- It stays true to its rugged identity while adding an upgraded sound system and fresh editions.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, inventory, and the classic Wrangler formula, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is worth a look, especially if you find one in cleaner condition.
