Is the 2016 Jeep Renegade a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Renegade earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Jeep also notes that the Renegade can be equipped with an affordably priced Advanced Technology package, which adds driver-assistance features that may help reduce stress in daily use.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this model’s ownership costs and durability can be more variable than you’d want, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Renegade?

At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, alignment, and any signs of prior repair. Because the Renegade’s safety record includes notable caveats, it’s smart to focus on how the vehicle has been maintained and whether any safety-related equipment is intact and functioning properly. If you’re shopping a higher-mileage example, pay extra attention to wear items and evidence of deferred maintenance.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trailhawk version adds 8.7 inches of ground clearance, skid plates, hill-descent control, and improved approach, departure, and breakover angles, while the Sport, Latitude, and Limited trims are the other named versions. The base Sport is the most stripped-down version, so you’ll want to compare equipment carefully if you care about comfort and convenience features.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a manual gearbox, while the optional 2.4-liter 4-cylinder pairs with an automatic transmission. The 2.4-liter makes 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque and feels responsive around town, though passing power can be limited when the cabin is full.
• Safety package: An available Advanced Technology package adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking assist with rear cross-traffic alert. It is recommended on versions other than the basic Sport model, so feature availability can vary by trim.
• Infotainment: The Renegade uses a 6.5-inch display, and it does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Uconnect Access adds voice text-message functions plus roadside assistance and emergency calling features.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.4-liter test vehicle returned 21.4 mpg in combined driving, versus an EPA rating of 24 mpg.

Which 2016 Jeep Renegade trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the least expensive path into the Renegade, but it is also the most stripped-down version. If you mainly want the Jeep look and the lowest entry price, it gets you there, but you should expect fewer comfort and convenience features than the higher trims.
• Latitude: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it can be equipped with useful upgrades like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, passive entry, remote start, navigation, and premium audio. It strikes the best balance between price and everyday livability.
• Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling cabin and a better-equipped Renegade without jumping all the way to the off-road-focused model. It suits you best if comfort and presentation matter more than trail capability.
• Trailhawk: This is the trim to buy if you want the Renegade’s most authentic Jeep character. It adds 8.7 inches of ground clearance, skid plates, hill-descent control, and improved off-road geometry, making it the clear choice for buyers who want the most capability.

For safety-minded shoppers, the available Advanced Technology package is worth seeking out, especially on trims above the basic Sport.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Renegade?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward patience.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,410 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.11% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,769, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Renegade's resale value?

The current average of $9,769 sits slightly below last year's $10,867.

That decline suggests the Renegade has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A lower current average means future resale gains may be limited unless you buy well and keep the vehicle in excellent condition. The good news is that a model with broad shopper appeal and distinctive styling can still attract attention when it’s priced right.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Renegade safe?

The 2016 Jeep Renegade earns 4-star ratings for driver and front passenger protection in a frontal collision, 3-star ratings for rear seat side-impact protection, and 3-star ratings for rollover resistance with 4-wheel drive.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety picture is mixed, and the rear-seat side-impact result is the biggest concern. The Renegade also had not been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety at the time of the review, though the previous year’s small overlap frontal result was Acceptable and did not lead to a Top Safety Pick nomination. The expert review also notes that the LATCH anchors are buried deeply, which can make child-seat installation frustrating.

The available Advanced Technology package adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking assist with rear cross-traffic alert. If safety is a priority, that package is worth seeking out, but it does not erase the model’s underlying crash-test concerns.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Renegade or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 review highlights its distinctive Jeep styling and everyday practicality in a small crossover package.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $9,100, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,769 average.
• It introduced Jeep capability in a compact, all-new package.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2016 is the stronger pick because pricing has eased and there are enough listings to compare. If your top priority is spending less up front, the 2015 can make sense, but you should be especially careful about condition and equipment before buying.
