Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for its broad range of abilities and its unmistakable appeal. People are drawn to it because it provides the ability to go almost anywhere at almost anytime and to do almost anything. It also has the kind of styling and image that can be a deciding factor for buyers who simply like the Jeep look and presence.
At the same time, the Grand Cherokee is not presented as a no-compromise SUV. The test-drive summary says that choosing one over other SUVs makes the most sense if you need to tow a fair amount of weight, need to go far off the pavement, or value its styling and image. It also notes that getting those strengths requires compromise, which is an important part of its character.

After driving it for the first time I knew I wanted it. I had to have some things line up for me to be able to buy it but they did and I was able to bring it home. The style, comfort and luxury are more than I ever could’ve asked for.

Rides and handles great. The 3.0L diesel runs awesome and gets excellent fuel mileage. Can't hear the diesel at all on the road. The looks of the GC are so sexy!

2016 Jeep Cherokee - great everyday vehicle. Super comfortable and great capabilities. 4x4 with all the comfort of a fine leather chair. Mudd/rocks no problem. Highway driving @ 80 mph no problem. Plenty of space for all my sh...stuff. :) This is our fourth GC and fifth Jeep overall. No complaints.

How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,335 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,245.49 |
| Year-Round High | $14,555.20 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,562 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.42% |
Prices have softened 8.42% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,444 listings available, which suggests you have room to compare options.
If you find a listing below $13,245.49, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, and they also call out the spacious interior and powerful Hemi engine. That lines up with the model’s broader appeal: you’re getting an SUV that can tow, venture off pavement, or simply deliver the Jeep styling and image many shoppers want. For buyers who want capability with a more upscale feel, that combination is a big part of the draw.
The market also shows healthy interest, with 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to comfort, performance, and luxurious features, while also highlighting the spacious interior and powerful engine choices. The expert evaluation adds that the Grand Cherokee is built for serious capability and can handle demanding use, but that kind of versatility usually comes with tradeoffs in everyday refinement and ownership simplicity. The cost-effectiveness assessment also warns that reliability predictions are unimpressive.
If you’re shopping used, that means you should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, because long-term ownership risk is higher than average for a vehicle with this much capability and complexity.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used for towing or off-road driving. Focus on signs of wear that could affect ride quality, braking, and electronics, since those are the kinds of areas that can matter most on a used Grand Cherokee. If you’re comparing multiple listings, condition should matter as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT, and the higher trims add more upscale equipment and features. The Overland test vehicle’s 19-speaker sound system and Advanced Technology package show how much equipment can separate trims, while the base versions are the ones most likely to leave you without those extras.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the optional 5.7-liter V8 is for maximum towing. Jeep also notes fuel-economy improvements for 2016, including stop/start, electric steering, aluminum suspension components, and low-rolling-resistance tires.
- Safety package: The Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. It is optional and pricey, so you should confirm whether a used listing has it.
- Infotainment: Uconnect uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen in Overland trim, with Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb added for 2016. The system is easy to use, but the navigation and connected services feel dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The updated V6 is rated at 21 mpg combined, and a tested Overland 4WD averaged 18.7 mpg. The optional diesel returned 22.9 mpg in testing.
Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling without paying for the more luxurious equipment found higher up the range.
- Limited: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of features and value, since it sits above the base model without jumping into the more expensive luxury-focused versions.
- Overland: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it brings a more upscale cabin, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, and access to the Advanced Technology package.
- Summit: Choose this if you want the most luxury-oriented Grand Cherokee experience short of the performance model.
- SRT: This is the one for buyers who want pavement performance and track-ready character rather than the usual SUV mission.
The safety package is optional on some trims, so verify whether a used example has the Advanced Technology package before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,444 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,245.49, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $13,335 sits slightly below last year's $14,562.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. The Grand Cherokee’s broad appeal still helps support demand, especially for shoppers who want capability and styling in one package.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says this model does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination because of a Marginal result in the small overlap frontal impact test.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The available Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is optional and costs nearly two grand, so you should check whether a used example has it. The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap result, which is a meaningful weakness to keep in mind when you’re comparing listings.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds fuel-economy improvements, updated steering, and an available advanced safety package.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,723, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,335 average.
- It offers a broad range of trims and engines for more budget flexibility.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,507, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,335 average.
- It leans harder into the Grand Cherokee’s upscale personality and off-road identity.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and current market availability, the 2016 is the sensible pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2015 is the value play; if you want the next step up in identity and refinement, the 2017 is worth a look.
