Why it stands out
People are drawn to the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee because it offers the ability to go almost anywhere at almost anytime and to do almost anything. That broad capability is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want an SUV that feels ready for more than just daily commuting.
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for three main reasons: it can tow a fair amount of weight, it can go far off the pavement, or it simply appeals to buyers who like Jeep’s styling and image. Those strengths make it distinctive, but they also come with compromise, so shoppers should expect to give up some practicality in exchange for its more specialized abilities.

After driving it for the first time I knew I wanted it. I had to have some things line up for me to be able to buy it but they did and I was able to bring it home. The style, comfort and luxury are more than I ever could’ve asked for.

Rides and handles great. The 3.0L diesel runs awesome and gets excellent fuel mileage. Can't hear the diesel at all on the road. The looks of the GC are so sexy!

2016 Jeep Cherokee - great everyday vehicle. Super comfortable and great capabilities. 4x4 with all the comfort of a fine leather chair. Mudd/rocks no problem. Highway driving @ 80 mph no problem. Plenty of space for all my sh...stuff. :) This is our fourth GC and fifth Jeep overall. No complaints.

How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,375 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,285.59 |
| Year-Round High | $14,620.20 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,619 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.51% |
Prices have softened 8.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,479 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $13,285.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, and they also call out the spacious interior and powerful Hemi engine. That lines up with the model’s broader appeal: you’re getting an SUV that can tow, venture off pavement, and still fit buyers who value Jeep styling and image.
With 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to comfort, performance, and luxurious features, while also highlighting the spacious interior and powerful engine choices. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that this Jeep is built around capability and compromise, which matters if you want something that can handle towing or rough terrain without feeling fragile.
The performance notes also describe the standard V6 as robust and say the automatic stop/start system operates in a mostly unobtrusive fashion. On the cost side, the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this model’s strengths come with tradeoffs, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing or off-road driving. Pay close attention to body condition, suspension behavior, braking feel, and any signs that the vehicle has been pushed hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The Overland test vehicle adds a 19-speaker sound system and an Advanced Technology package, while the base Laredo is the entry point and the SRT is the pavement-focused performance model.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 5.7-liter V8 is available if you want maximum towing capacity. The V6 is described as strong, and the lineup also includes an optional diesel V6.
- Safety package: The Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. It is optional and pricey.
- Infotainment: Uconnect uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen, and for 2016 it adds Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb functions. The system also supports phone pairing and music streaming, though the connected-service experience is dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The updated V6 is rated at 21 mpg combined, and a diesel test returned 22.9 mpg.
Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability without paying for the higher-end luxury and tech upgrades. It makes the most sense if you mainly want the Jeep image and utility.
- Limited: This is the trim to watch if you want a better balance of equipment and value. It sits above the base model and is one of the trims eligible for the 75th Anniversary Edition package.
- Overland: This is the best-value trim if you want the richer cabin and the strongest mix of comfort and equipment. The test vehicle’s Overland setup included the 19-speaker sound system and the Advanced Technology package.
- Summit: Choose this if you want the more upscale end of the lineup and are willing to pay for it.
- SRT: This is the pavement performance choice. It is track-ready from the showroom floor and is aimed at buyers who care more about on-road speed than off-road utility.
The safety package is optional rather than standard, so verify whether a given vehicle has the Advanced Technology package before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,479 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,285.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $13,375 sits slightly below last year's $14,619.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some of the model’s depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. It also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on trim, condition, mileage, and whether the vehicle has a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
It earns a Marginal rating from IIHS and does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The available Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is optional, so you should confirm it’s installed if safety tech matters to you.
The main caveat is the IIHS small overlap frontal result, which keeps this model from reaching a stronger safety designation.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances towing, off-road ability, and Jeep styling with a compromise-heavy but distinctive character.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,796, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,375 average.
- It offers a broad range of trims and engines for buyers who want flexibility.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,549, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,375 average.
- It broadens the lineup with a stronger upscale-and-off-road personality.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of current pricing, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the sensible target. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-year alternative.
