How much does the 2016 Jeep Compass cost?

Prices have softened 8.47% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 965 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Compass a good car?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is a mixed but workable choice if you want a value-focused crossover and can live with its age. It earns 3.8/5 from owners and 6.5/10 from experts.

The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 8/10.

Owners repeatedly praise the roomy interior, comfort, good fuel economy, and strong value for the money. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a lower entry point and the possibility of incentives, especially if you want a crossover that keeps costs down without feeling stripped bare.

28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 Jeep Compass reliable?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is best approached as a used crossover that can make sense on value, but deserves careful vetting before you buy. Owners describe it as a great value with nice features, and they also mention it as dependable in everyday use, though some report engine and transmission problems.

The expert drive notes that the Compass can still hang with newer crossovers in how it drives, and the cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces that it remains a competent discount option. That said, the same ownership profile that makes it appealing also means you should pay close attention to mechanical condition and service history.

If you’re shopping used, prioritize a thorough inspection and a complete maintenance record, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle long term.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Compass?

At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then confirm that any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings with similar prices. Focus on overall condition, signs of uneven wear, and whether the vehicle feels mechanically sorted on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport is effectively the base trim and comes with an auxiliary audio jack, tire pressure monitoring lamp, illuminated cupholders, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The Sport SE adds heated leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The 75th Anniversary Edition is based on the Sport but adds remote engine start and a power moonroof, while the Latitude adds a 60/40 split/fold rear seat, rear 115-volt auxiliary power outlet, brightwork grille, and power foldaway heated side mirrors. The High Altitude adds bright-side roof rails, 17-inch Granite painted wheels, and a 6-way power driver’s seat.
• Powertrain: The Compass offers a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through a 5-speed manual or CVT, and AWD models can also get a 6-speed automatic. The 6-speed automatic is described as the best option for smooth shifts and decent acceleration.
• Safety package: The Compass comes standard with 6 multistage airbags for the driver and front passenger, second-row side curtain airbags, crumple protection, and side-impact door beams. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision avoidance are not included, and the backup camera is available rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The base setup includes an auxiliary audio input jack, Bluetooth streaming for hands-free calling, and a USB port. The system uses the dated Radio 430 Uconnect interface, and an available flip-down liftgate stereo system is offered on the Latitude.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.4-liter AWD model with the 6-speed automatic is rated at 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined. The CVT version with full-time AWD is rated at 20 city, 23 highway, and 21 combined. The best performer is the 2.0-liter FWD manual at 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined.

Which 2016 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport SE, Latitude, High Altitude.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Compass experience at the lowest cost. It includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and the basic convenience features you need, so it makes sense if you want the cheapest path into the model.
• Sport SE: This trim adds heated leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. It is the better value if you want a more comfortable daily driver without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Latitude: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of equipment and value. It adds a split-fold rear seat, rear power outlet, brightwork grille, and heated power-folding mirrors, which makes it the most well-rounded choice for many shoppers.
• High Altitude: This trim adds more appearance and comfort upgrades, including bright-side roof rails, 17-inch Granite painted wheels, and a power driver’s seat. It suits you best if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it.

The safety equipment remains basic across the lineup, and the Compass does not include advanced driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring or forward-collision warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Compass?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with some room to find a good deal if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 965 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.47% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,882, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Compass's resale value?

The current average of $7,939 sits slightly below last year's $8,674.

That price movement suggests the Compass has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help if you buy at the right number. If you sell later, you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the vehicle has a clean history.

Because the market is already pricing this model below last year’s average, a well-kept example should be easier to justify than one with accident history or deferred maintenance. For a future seller, that means documentation and condition will matter more than trim alone.

Is the 2016 Jeep Compass safe?

The 2016 Jeep Compass earns Good for head restraints and seats from IIHS, and it earns three-star ratings for frontal crashes and four-star ratings for rollovers from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Compass comes standard with 6 multistage airbags for the driver and front passenger, second-row side curtain airbags, crumple protection, and side-impact door beams. However, it lacks advanced safety gear that is common on newer crossovers, and blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision avoidance are not included.

The backup camera is available rather than standard, so you should confirm whether a specific listing has it. The safety picture is acceptable for the era, but it is not a standout if you want modern driver-assistance tech.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.47% compared with last year.
• It improves on the original Compass while still offering a lower-cost, value-oriented crossover experience.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $11,268, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $7,939 average.
• It brings a redesigned Compass with more legitimate off-road capability.

The bottom line: If your priority is price and you want a competent used crossover, the 2016 is the better value play. If you want a newer design and are willing to spend more, the 2017 is the stronger upgrade path.
