How much does the 2016 GMC Yukon XL cost?

Prices have softened 12.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 812 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL a good car?

Generally — the 2016 GMC Yukon XL earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating, which points to a vehicle that delivers on its core mission without being a slam-dunk recommendation. You get the kind of strengths that matter in a full-size SUV: spaciousness, comfort, seating for large families, and a smooth ride. The overview also highlights strong utility, including room for people and cargo plus serious towing capability, which makes it especially relevant if you need one vehicle to handle family duty and trailer duty. The market also shows 31.4% of listings as good or great deals, so there are some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers find spacious, comfortable, and easy to live with over time, and it also emphasizes the Yukon XL’s smooth ride and family-friendly practicality. At the same time, the expert notes flag reliability concerns, including manufacturing oversights and below-average reliability performance across most categories. The ownership picture suggests you should focus on condition and maintenance history, because long-term risk is more about individual vehicle care than the model’s basic appeal.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings, because condition differences can be more important than trim or mileage alone. Pay close attention to signs of wear, repair quality, and whether the features you expect are actually working as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SLE includes a long list of useful equipment, including front and rear parking sensors, auto headlights and wipers, a rear-view camera, remote ignition, keyless entry, tri-zone auto climate control, rear privacy glass, power front seats, cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, and 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot. SLT adds more comfort and convenience, including keyless ignition and entry, a hands-free power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated power second row, power-folding third-row seats, power-folding mirrors with auto-dim, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, driver memory, wireless charging, and ambient interior lighting. Denali adds a larger V8, a customizable digital instrument panel, navigation, second-row captain’s chairs, a 10-speaker Bose Surround Sound stereo, and active noise cancellation.
• Powertrain: SLE and SLT models use a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic. You can choose rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case and low-range gearing. Denali models use a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: An Enhanced Driver Alert package adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On SLT, that package also includes rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise with crash-avoidance braking is also mentioned as an available add-on.
• Infotainment: The Yukon XL uses an 8-inch touchscreen with the upgraded IntelliLink system, Bluetooth, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, an SD slot, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The faster processor helps reduce input delay.
• Fuel efficiency: The 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 16 mpg city/23 highway with rear-wheel drive and 15/22 with 4-wheel drive, with a combined rating of 18 mpg for both. The 6.2-liter V8 is rated at 14 mpg city and 20 highway with a combined rating of 16 with 4-wheel drive.

Which 2016 GMC Yukon XL trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL is offered in 3 trim levels: SLE, SLT, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SLE: This is the value-oriented starting point, and it already gives you a lot of the Yukon XL’s core appeal: 9-person capacity, the 8-inch touchscreen, Bose audio, parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and the basic convenience features most shoppers will want. If you want the lowest-cost path into the model without giving up the essentials, this is the trim to target.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a meaningful jump in comfort and convenience, including heated and ventilated front seats, a heated second row, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless charging, and more advanced safety content. If you want the Yukon XL to feel properly upscale without jumping to Denali pricing, this is the sweet spot.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with the larger 6.2-liter V8, a more upscale cabin, a digital instrument panel, navigation, second-row captain’s chairs, and the upgraded Bose Surround Sound system. Choose this if you want the most premium Yukon XL experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is a meaningful upgrade on this model, and SLT trims get the most complete version of it.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 812 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,779, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?

The current average of $17,779 sits slightly below last year's $20,234.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can reduce the impact of further depreciation. Listings that are clean, well-equipped, and properly maintained should hold up better than rougher examples because shoppers in this segment tend to value condition and features heavily.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL safe?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and five-star ratings in side impact.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Yukon XL includes a long list of safety features, and the available Enhanced Driver Alert package adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On SLT trims, that package also adds rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Even so, the expert notes point to a few concerns, including longer stopping distances than some rivals and owner complaints about brake failures and rearview camera issues at night.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings meaningful updates, including a faster IntelliLink processor, Apple CarPlay, lane-keep assist, auto high beams, and a hands-free power rear liftgate on SLT trims and above.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the better pick if you want the updated tech and convenience features, especially at a price that has already moved down from last year. If you’re more price-sensitive and willing to shop carefully, the strongest move is to focus on the cleanest, best-maintained listing rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
