Is the 2016 GMC Canyon a good car?

Generally — the 2016 GMC Canyon earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 6.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly point to a comfortable ride, good looks, and a balance of power and economy. Is the 2016 GMC Canyon reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback highlights a truck that many people found dependable enough to appreciate its comfortable ride, good looks, and balanced power and economy. The expert drive notes also describe the Canyon as structurally strong and robust, which supports confidence in everyday use. GMC’s reduced powertrain warranty and the mention of unexpected mechanical issues in owner feedback mean you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and condition before buying.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Canyon?

At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and any evidence of mechanical issues, since owner feedback mentions concerns about condition and unexpected mechanical problems. If the truck has been used hard, make sure the ride, brakes, and drivetrain feel consistent on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Canyon was offered in SL, Canyon, SLE, and SLT trims, and the lower trims are the ones most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. The content points to a wide spread in comfort and convenience, with higher trims adding more upscale touches and technology.
• Powertrain: Most Canyons use a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and a 6-speed automatic, and 4-wheel drive is available. The truck is described as responsive, but it can require revs to access peak power and may feel thirsty in city use.
• Safety package: An optional forward-collision warning system and an available lane-departure warning system are mentioned, along with OnStar automatic crash response. Blind-spot information and rear cross-traffic alert are not offered.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay is available through the IntelliLink system, which uses a touchscreen interface with large virtual buttons, text messaging support, and Wi-Fi access through OnStar subscription services.
• Fuel efficiency: The test truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving, and the content notes unexpectedly good highway mileage with the optional tonneau cover.

Which 2016 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, Canyon, SLE, SLT.

Here's the short version:

• SL: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Canyon’s core capability at the lowest rung of the lineup. It is the trim most likely to feel sparse if you want more comfort or tech.
• Canyon: This trim is the best-value starting point if you want the Canyon nameplate without jumping too far up the price ladder. It should suit you if you want a straightforward midsize truck and plan to add only the equipment you truly need.
• SLE: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and value. It sits in the sweet spot for shoppers who want more comfort and convenience without paying for the top trim.
• SLT: This is the most upscale choice in the lineup, and it suits you if you want the most premium-feeling Canyon. The test-drive content shows this trim can be loaded with options, but it is also the one most likely to push the price up quickly.

The safety content notes that the Canyon’s available driver-assistance features are limited, so you should not expect a full suite of advanced aids even on higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Canyon?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 630 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.10% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,846, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $18,215 sits slightly below last year's $18,798.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, the current trend means you may not see rapid appreciation, but you can still benefit if you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition. The Canyon’s value story is helped by steady shopper interest in midsize trucks and by its solid owner satisfaction.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2016 GMC Canyon earns a Good rating from IIHS in moderate overlap frontal-impact testing, and it earns three-star rollover resistance ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon includes OnStar automatic crash response, which can alert authorities if the airbags deploy and the driver is unresponsive. An optional forward-collision warning system and an available lane-departure warning system are also mentioned. You do not get blind-spot information or rear cross-traffic alert, so the safety tech list is useful but not comprehensive.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 adds Apple CarPlay to the available IntelliLink system.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $19,958, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,215 average.
• It is presented as the smallest package for buyers who need a truck that can still handle serious work.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the easier buy because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you can spend more and want the next model year’s broader appeal, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade path.

How does the 2016 GMC Canyon compare to the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

Our experts score the 2016 GMC Canyon 6.3/10 and the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10.

The Colorado edges the Canyon on expert score and average used price, while the Canyon has the stronger brand-specific styling and a slightly higher average used price.
