How much does the 2016 Ford Mustang cost?

Prices have softened 3.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,789 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.85/5 user-rated car with an expert score of 7.5/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise the Mustang’s fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, stylish design, and value compared with similar cars. That lines up well with the car’s use case as a sporty coupe or convertible that still feels approachable for everyday driving. Some owners do note missing features like Apple CarPlay, so the appeal is strongest if you care more about driving character than the latest tech polish.

With 31.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?

Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable, enjoyable over time, and worth counting on for the long haul. The expert driving impressions also support that sense of durability by describing a car that feels composed, confident, and well sorted in everyday use. Ford’s included maintenance perk for the first scheduled visit adds a small ownership bonus early on.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic satisfaction and more about how the car was treated, modified, and maintained before you buy it.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect from the trim. Because this is a performance car, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim brings standard features like 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey, while higher trims add more comfort and tech.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a V6, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, or a V8, with the turbo four offering strong output and better fuel economy than the V8.
• Safety package: Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, while parking sensors are optional across the lineup.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 arrives with an 8-inch touchscreen on higher trims, and the system is quicker and more capable than the older setup.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 17 mpg city/28 highway/21 combined with the manual or 22 combined with the automatic; the turbo four returns 22/31/26 with the manual or 21/32/25 with the automatic; the V8 returns 15/25/19.

Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium.

Here's the short version:

• V6: This is the value play if you want the Mustang look and standard equipment without stretching the budget. It already includes a solid list of features, so it makes sense if you care more about the badge and driving feel than premium extras.
• EcoBoost: This is the best-value trim if you want stronger performance than the V6 and better efficiency than the V8. It also opens the door to the Performance Package, which adds meaningful chassis and braking upgrades.
• EcoBoost Premium: This is the trim to choose if you want the most rounded mix of tech and comfort, including Sync 3, leather, heated and ventilated seats, and dual-zone climate control.
• GT: This is the right pick if V8 power is your priority and you want the classic Mustang performance experience. You give up some premium features, but you gain the bigger engine and available performance hardware.
• GT Premium: This is the most complete choice if you want V8 performance without giving up the nicer cabin and convenience features. It’s also the trim tied to the California Special package in the expert review.

Premium Mustangs can also add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,789 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.91% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,408, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?

The current average of $19,221 sits slightly below last year's $20,004.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more confidently now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this model year is still desirable, but pricing pressure means you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and originality.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?

The 2016 Ford Mustang earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, while parking sensors are available to help with tight maneuvers. The expert review also notes strong braking performance, which adds confidence in everyday driving.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.91% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford added heritage touches and Sync 3, making this year feel fresher than a simple carryover.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $19,945, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $19,221 average.
• It was a meaningful redesign year that brought a big step forward dynamically and technologically.

The bottom line: If you want the better buy today, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with fresh updates and solid owner satisfaction. If you’re comparing purely on value and want the earlier redesign-year character, the 2015 is still worth a look, but it doesn’t undercut the 2016 on price here.
