Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because Ford chose not to treat it as a simple carryover after the car’s 50th anniversary year. Instead, it arrived with some old favorites and new surprises meant to keep the pony car feeling fresh, including hood-mounted turn signals that first appeared in ’67, new Black Accent and California Special packages, and the GT Performance package finally available for the convertible.
That mix of heritage and updates is a big part of the Mustang’s appeal. It gives buyers a car with recognizable style and a sense of history, while also adding enough fresh packaging to make the lineup feel more special. Owners also praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, and stylish design, and many see strong value compared with similar cars. On the other hand, some drivers noted missing features like Apple CarPlay, and fuel economy can be a mixed point depending on the model.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

There are 1,889 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and condition. If you find a listing below $18,412.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — 4.85/5 owners rate it highly, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, and stylish design. The overview also points to strong value compared with similar cars, which matters if you want a sports car that still feels attainable. For you, that means the Mustang makes the most sense if you want a pony car with heritage appeal, lively driving manners, and broad everyday use.
The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 29.1% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car people enjoy living with over time, especially for its fun driving character, smooth ride, and overall value. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on the Mustang to deliver the experience buyers expect from it, rather than feeling like a one-note novelty. The expert notes also reinforce that it remains a well-rounded, capable sports car rather than a fragile specialty machine.
Ford also frames the car as a strong value in the segment, which helps ownership feel more manageable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition can vary a lot depending on how hard the car was driven and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car still feels tight and well sorted on the road. Because this is a performance car, you’ll want to pay close attention to wear items and evidence of aggressive use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version includes standard features such as 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey. Higher trims add power seats, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and other upgrades.
- Powertrain: You get a V6, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, or a V8, depending on trim. The V6 is rated at 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, the EcoBoost at 310 hp and 320 lb-ft, and the V8 at 435 hp and 400 lb-ft. Efficiency ranges from 17 mpg city/28 highway/21 combined for the V6 manual to 22/31/26 for the EcoBoost manual and 15/25/19 for the V8.
- Safety package: The Mustang includes standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Premium models can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning. Optional front and rear parking sensors are available across the lineup.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 is the key upgrade, and the upgraded system uses an 8-inch touchscreen. The premium setup adds a 9-speaker system, and the tech package also brings features like Track Apps. Some trims still leave you without Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 manual returns 17 mpg city/28 highway/21 combined, the V6 automatic improves to 22 combined, the EcoBoost manual returns 22/31/26, the EcoBoost automatic returns 21/32/25, and the V8 returns 15/25/19.
Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT Premium, and California Special.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The V6 gives you the core Mustang experience, but it lacks the richer comfort and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The EcoBoost Premium is the best all-around value if you want Sync 3, heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a more upscale cabin.
- Premium/top trim: The GT Premium is the pick if you want the V8 plus the premium features you give up on the lower V8 trim.
- Off-road trim: Not applicable here.
Premium Mustangs can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

- Inventory: There are 1,889 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.1% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $19,761 sits slightly below last year's $20,599.
That tells you the market has softened, which can work against you if you’re planning to sell soon. If you buy now, you should expect depreciation to remain part of the ownership equation, especially if the car is modified or heavily used. For a future seller, clean condition and strong documentation will matter a lot more than simply having the right badge.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?
It earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Mustang comes with standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. If you choose a Premium Mustang, you can also add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning. Optional front and rear parking sensors are available to help with tight maneuvers and splitter clearance.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford added heritage touches and fresh packages, including hood-mounted turn signals, Black Accent and California Special packages, and a convertible GT Performance package.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,453, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $19,761 average.
- It was a redesigned Mustang with a big improvement in dynamics and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better-priced choice with strong owner satisfaction and a freshened lineup, the 2016 is the smarter default. If you’re comparing closely and want the earlier redesign story, the 2015 still makes sense, but you’ll likely pay more for it.
