The turbo V6 engines are a frequent highlight, and the truck’s upscale Limited version gives you a more premium feel than you might expect from a full-size pickup. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is age-related wear, especially on higher-mileage trucks where maintenance history matters more.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?

At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or a premium trim with more equipment to evaluate. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or heavy use, since the market includes a sizable number of trucks with accident history. If you’re shopping a Limited or similarly loaded version, make sure the luxury features and electronics all work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited, with the Limited standing out for its upscale look and luxury-focused interior. The base XL is the most work-oriented choice, while higher trims add more comfort and premium touches.
• Powertrain: The truck is offered with a standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and the broader lineup also includes two turbocharged V6 engines or a V8. The EcoBoost setup is praised for strong power and a 17 mpg combined estimate.
• Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so trim choice matters.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display with swipe capability, improved voice recognition, Siri compatibility, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is optional, and Ford also offers useful tech such as Pro Trailer Backup Assist and a 360-degree camera system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert reports 17 mpg combined, and the test loop returned 16.7 mpg.

Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the most affordable path into the F-150 lineup, and it makes sense if you want the truck’s core capability without paying for luxury extras.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to the premium end of the range.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want a stronger mix of comfort and equipment, especially if you plan to use the truck as both a daily driver and a family vehicle.
• King Ranch: This trim leans into a more upscale personality, making it a good fit if you want a richer cabin and a more distinctive premium feel.
• Platinum: This is the better choice if you want a near-luxury truck with more polished styling and a higher-end presentation.
• Limited: This is the top luxury pick, with the most upscale materials and the strongest premium vibe; it suits you best if comfort and exclusivity matter more than value.

Safety content notes that some driver-assistance features are available rather than standard, so check equipment carefully by trim.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

If you find a listing below $18,635, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $18,635 sits slightly below last year's $19,828.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may temper future resale gains if you plan to sell later. If you buy at a strong price and keep the truck in clean condition, you can still protect value better than with a poorly maintained example. Premium trims may hold appeal with the right buyer, but condition and mileage will matter a lot.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2016 Ford F-150 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 4-star rollover resistance rating. The IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick, but it is not eligible for Top Safety Pick+ without automatic emergency braking.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders after an airbag deployment if your paired device is in the vehicle. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are optional rather than standard, so you should verify the exact safety equipment on any used truck you consider.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Limited trim and upgraded tech, making it a more luxurious F-150.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $17,491, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,635 average.
• It introduced aluminum body construction and turbocharged power.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $21,106, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,635 average.
• It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, luxury, and broad appeal, the 2016 is the stronger target. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 gives you a lower entry price, while the 2017 makes more sense only if you specifically want the Raptor-focused upgrade path.
